The more than 370 unionized em- ployees, members of Local 16-0 of the Communication Energy and Pa- perworker's Union (CEP), voted al- most 80 per cent in favor of accept- ing a new three-year deal calling for an increase to the average wage of four per cent in the first year of the agreement and three per cent in each of the two remaining years. For the first time in many years, an early deal was struck between the company and union, an indication that relations have improved signifi- cantly since the strike of 2006. "This was different than in the past and we got down to business, had logical dialogue on issues and conducted business in an appropri- ate way," Local 16-0 Union Presi- dent, Lionel Carter said. "I am certainly glad to have this contract and both parties deserve credit for working together to reach a fair deal." Aside from the wage increases, Carter said there were also im- provements made to benefits and corrections to some other outstand- ing issues and language in the con- tract. The United Way (UW) of Huron has tucked in just over $205,000 following its extended 2008 campaign nm. The goal was set at $275,000. Traditionally, the .UW campaign goes from its goal announcement near Labour Day until the end of the year. This time around, the campaign was extended into 2009, wrapping up at March's end. It's not the first time Huron's UW fell short. According to board of directors chair Jerry McDonnell, the 2007 campaign failed to reach its target as well. "I think it became obvious that people couldn't give as much," he said, "If they do still have a job, they're worried about it." It's that same worry that may be what makes the UW more important than ever in turbulent economic times. A type of social safety net, the UW of Huron is made up of 11 community agencies, including money management and job search organizations like Family Services Perth -Huron, and the Women's Shelter, Second Stage Housing and Counselling Services of Huron. The United Way receives about 40 per cent of its donations from individual do- nors, with the rest coming from corporate sponsors. "It just means we have to cut back on. what we give to the agencies," McDonnell said of the campaign shortage. '"They'll ei- ther have t raise more money on their own, or cut back on services."
