The Goderich Signal-Star, 2009-04-01, Page 31Goderich Signal -Star, Wednesday, April 1, 2009 - Page A31 Tweens take Western Region bronze in ringette The Goderich Tkveen Ringette team captured a bronze medal in the 2009 Western Region Ringette Tournament this weekend in Strat- ford, St.Mary's and Mitchell. This was one of the best games the girls played all year and the medal round could have went ei- ther way. The parents and coaching staff were very proud of the heart Juniors end When Goderich's Junior Ringette team began the season in October of 2008 they had 11 skaters and a goalie. When they launched into overtime at the season ending regional tour- nament against Seaforth on Sunday, March 29 at the RBC ice pad in Strat- ford - they were down to eight skaters and a goalie. This fact became too much to over- , come, and the season tilted in Sea- forths' favour. Goderich began the tournament with two losses - the first to London Lynx and the second to Exeter. This did not deter the ladies and Saturday night they tied their nemesis from the entire year, Seaforth, 6-6. and determination the girls showed throughout the game. The girls started off the tourna- ment on Friday night with an im- pressive 11-1 win over Kitchener. Next up on Saturday Morning was Elora -Fergus. The girls started this game the way they finished Friday night with a 4-0 lead after the first period and skated away with a 6-3 win. This set up a showdown with a strong Owen Sound squad on Sat- urday night. A win put the girls in the gold medal game, a loss - the bronze medal game. Unfortunately the girls came up short in a 7-6 loss. That put them against Tillsonburg Sunday morning for the bronze That result left the bronze medal game to be decided with Seaforth on Sunday afternoon. In what can only be described as a gutsy and tena- cious effort, the two teams battled to a four -all tie at the end of regulation. It seemed only fitting that the teams that were so evenly matched though - out the season needed 15 minutes of sudden death overtime to decide who departed with the medal. As already mentioned, the Goder- ich bench was severely depleted with three players unable to participate, however both teams traded incredible scoring chances and caused many a spectator and parent to convulse and cheer in the span of mere seconds. medal game. Owen Sound went on to win the gold medal game against Mitchell 6-2. The bronze medal game Sunday was a see -saw battle and it was evident that Tillsonburg wasn't going to just hand over the Over 12 minutes of non-stop action at both ends of the rink halted when Seaforth fired a shot into the Goder- ich net. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it was a heart -breaker sec- ond to none. Despite the end of the season, the Juniors ended the year with many positive achievements. The team ended off with a respectable fourth in the Huron -Perth standings, won a gold medal in the Exeter tourna- ment, galvanized an incomparable team spirit and created new bonds of friendship. Congratulations on a great season ladies - take that "never give up" at- titude everywhere you go ! Pirates looking to building '09-'10 team Denny Scott signal -star staff The Goderich Pirates play-off drive ended on March 14 with a fourth loss to the Lucan-Ilderton Jets. _Te . Pirates raninto a streak of bad luck according to GM Trevor Bazinet, as they had to face the two top - seeded teams in their division back-to-back in the play- offs. "We played the number one seeded team league and the number two seeded team in the league," Bazinet explained. "Lucan is walking through everyone now, they beat Exeter four straight and is waiting for the Lucknow-Durham' series, and I don't think they'll have any trouble against either of those two teams." Bazinet feels that, although the results seem negative, the Pirates played great hockey for the majority of their playoff run. "In the nine games we played we may- be didn't play well in two games," he said. "Three of those nine games went to OT and we ended up on the bad end of them." Next year's Pirates will hopefully look familiar, Bazinet said, stating that winning teams are teams that have spent a few sea- sons together. "We know we're probably going to lose a couple guys," he said. "It seems to be our downfall, we keep losing guys and we're re- building that team every year." The team's chances for building a champi- onship bench are hampered by development of potential players, according to Bazinet. The local Junior 'C' team, the Sailors, bring in players from other centres, which makes it hard to retain them as Goderich players. Players who come to be a part of the Sailors that are from centres like Lucknow or Clin- ton will leave afterwards to join the Senior 'A' teams in their own town, hurting the pool of available players. Bazinet also said that the team wants to re- main as local as possible, because that's what the fans want. Coaching and staffing will remain the same, but a few executive members are stepping down, so those spots will be open. "Anyone who is interested in helping us out, in the executive or otherwise, can contact me," Bazinet said. Current standings have Saugeen Shores, first -seeded in the North Division, and Shelburne, third -seeded in the North, fighting for a Senior 'AA' finals slot. Saugeen Shores is leading the series 3-1. Competing for the other Senior 'AA' final slot is Tav- istock and Petrolia, who are tied, at two games each. In Senior 'A' trophy action, second -seeded Lucan has skated past sixth -seeded Exeter in 4 quick games, and is waiting for Lucknow and Durham to finish their series to determine the championship match up. Lucknow currently leads the series 3-1. Senior 'B' - champions Milverton beat out Shallow Lake in six games last week.
