The Goderich Signal-Star, 2009-04-01, Page 15Be dryer -safe this spring
A recent fire call that the Goderich Fire
Department responded to was caused by a
dryer. While warmer weather may prompt
residents to dry their clothes outside, dry
season has not settled in yet.
With dryer usage, its important to re-
member it is an appliance that generates
heat to perform its job, and this can be dan-
gerous. Remember the following tips when
using your dryer.
- Check your ducting
Plastic or foil duct -work may be easy to
use, but rigid or semi-rigid metal will pro-
vide maximum airflow, not collect lint as
easily, and resist crushing, which can re-
duce the airflow for your dryer and cause
a fire hazard.
- Clean lint screens and filters before or
after each load
If your clothes are still damp after be-
ing run through the dryer, its possible that
you're either over -loading your dryer, or
your dryer's ventilation has been cut off.
The latter can usually be solved by clean-
ing out your lint trap or screen before or
after doing a load of laundry.
- Clean your vent and ductwork
Check both components of your exhaust
system, inside your home and outside, to
be sure nothing is blocking exhaust from
being pushed outside. Periodically clean
these thoroughly to prevent build-up.
- Clean behind the dryer
Make sure the rear of your dryer is free
of lint build-up, and have a qualified ser-
vice person clean the interior of your dryer
to eliminate lint accumulation. Also be sure
to clear anything out of the area of your
dryer that could cause a blockage.
By following these tips, you can prevent
a potentially dangerous situation.
Also, be aware of the local weather re-
port, if you have laundry day coming up,
push it ahead or behind a day, and dry your
clothes on a clothesline, it's the safest way.
