Despite an early blanket
of snow, the Livery Film
Festival is shoveling off
its proverbial red carpet
in anticipation of the ar-
rival of Canadian director
Michael McGowen.
McGowen is expected
to attend the screening
of his latest work, One
Week, a Canadian roadtrip
comedy -drama.
"He is our very special
guest at the film festival
this year, and his film will
be our closing screening
on Saturday," said festi-
val committee member
Brigitte Wolf.
The film, McGowen's
third, is being touted as
a fiercely patriotic tale
of instinct gone awry fol-
lowing a terminal illness
diagnosis.
"You really don't need a
plot to make the story of a
guy driving across Cana-
da into a worthwhile film
experience. Those who've
done it know the journey
is transcendent enough,"
writes Sun Media enter-
tainment columnist Jim
Slotek. " Which is good
news for One Week, the
leisurely, middlebrow-
contemplative road movie star-
ring Joshua Jackson as a twen-
tysomething who reacts to the
news of his terminal cancer by
ditching his responsibilities and
fiance and hitting the road on a
vintage motorbike."
Livery Film Festival commit-
tee members chose the film for
their own closing after its show-
ing at the Toronto International
Film Festival.
"We're very pleased and ex-
cited that Michael is going to
be with us," said Wolf, "And I
think the festival -g )ers will take
great advantage of his visit.".
McGowen will be on hand af-
ter the screening of One Week
for a short question and answer
period, after which the director
will attend the Festival wrap
party hosted at J's Bistro in
Goderich.
A native of Toronto, Michael
