Both teams generated lots of of fensive action in all periods, but the Sailors really put the pressure on in the first two periods of the game, scoring four of their five goals there. Wallaceburg was the first to strike, putting a rebound just past Goderich's defensive line, but that would be their only goal till mid- way through the third period. • What followed was a direct at- tack on Wallaceburg's goaltender. Goderich's Chad Kernighan decked out Wallaceburg's defensive line, sneaking in front of the net to put one up high. Not long after, DJ Stevenson wrapped around Wallaceburg's net, bypassing the defensive players to sneak one bottom corner. Assists were netted by Chase Kulich and Ian Simpson. The second period was all God- erich, through pressure and solid mid -ice defense, they were able to maintain either possession, or time on the attack for the majority of the period. • Kulich was able to capitalize on a face -off -turned -scramble allowed and put a rebound top -shelf, off of an original Harry Parson shot. Another goal by James Huber, assigted by Stevenson, brought Goderich three points ahead of Wallaceburg by the time the second was over. Goderich successfully killed their second penalty of the game early in the third, but right after they re- turned to full strength, Wallaceburg seemed to wake up, putting a shot from the point on net, cutting God- erich's lead to two. Unfortunately, the late game rally wouldn't be enough, as Wallace - burg was unable to capitalize on any more offensive opportunities. A hooking call late in the third gave Goderich the power -play, and they took full advantage. An odd - man rush by Brandon Johnston and Taylor Helesic resulted in a power- play goal, setting the final score 5-2. Sailorettes start big, finish in consolation Gerard Crease 'signal -star staff You could count the number of saves Goderich Sailorettes goalten- der, Lauren German made Friday night on one hand. Then again, you could count the number of shots on net the same way as the girls skated to an easy 6-0 win over Tiverton during opening night action of Young Canada Week. Sailorettes captain Jessica Hastie lit up the scoreboard four times in the win. Hastie began with a one-two combo just 16 seconds apart in the first period followed by a short-hand- ed effort in the second and one for the road six minutes into the third. . The score did no justice to Tiver- ton's goaltender, who was bom- barded by Goderich throughout most of the game, and stopped numerous shots on net. While Goderich was able to cut through the Tiverton defence, the road to the five -hole was covered by an intuitive keeper. • . For the first five minutes of the game, the puck barely left Tiverton's zone, but even though the pressure was on, no goals were let in until Hasties' first about seven minutes in. Rounding out the scoring for the Sailorettes was Ashley Bakker from Callie Vance and Haley Ferguson off Vance and Gwendolyn Schilbe. Early assists went to Ferguson, Ally : Hulley, Vance, Madison McLean, Shaley Oster and Schilbe. The Sailorettes rode . a string of wins to their semi-final March 15 against Mount Forest, but lost 3-0 to put them on the consolation side and • a• 3-2 loss to Blyth/Brussels. Local Leaguefalls one shy of South Huron Had there been just 30 seconds more in the game, the Goderich Canadian Tire Local League boys could have pulled out a win against South Huron March 13, but the clock ran out on the Sailors' comeback, losing 4-3. It was the opening game of Young Canada Week, and Goderich goalten- der Aaron Boniface had his work cut out for him as South Huron drove hard and created many scoring opportuni- ties. With the home team down 3-0 go- ing into the third, and 4-0 just minutes later the peewees needed to muster up a comeback - and they did. The Achilles heel of South Huron's goalie proved to be top -shelf on the glove hand, as Mitchell Chambers would demonstrate after freeing the puck from a scramble iri front of God- erich's net. Chambers planted a wrist - shot over the shoulder of the Sabres' goalieand into the twine to, get the puck rolling six minutes into the third. This was followed up four minutes later, when Evan Guest glided through the defence and found the same sweet spot, assisted by Kaelen Profit and • Correction Notice On Wrap for the Shoppers Optimum® MasterCard® credit card of the • Shoppers Drug Mart® Flyer in effect from. The momentum was switching in Goderich's favour, and while the pee wees•pressed hard, the Sabres held the two-point lead until Stephen DeJager notched a last -second goal quite liter- ally. An earlier slapshot by DeJager was inches away from making it a tie game. Local League action continues to- day, March 19 against either Ripley or BCH #2.
