From pine, pop- lar and walnut woods, George June cre- ated the extensive array of wooden folk art now on display at the Huron County Museum. George Forester June lived in Cottam, Ontario, a small town in Essex County. A retired farmer, he was afflicted with sci- atic rheumatism in 1929 from which he only partially recovered. Used to working with his hands and keeping busy, he was in search of a hobby. While at his cottage near Lake Couchiching he first whittled a cedar cane. It was the beginning of a hobby that would last the rest of his life. Carved mostly in the 1930s and 1940s, his pieces vary from full size human fig- ures to tiny intricate acorn chains and jewelry. Two beautiful tables are includ- ed in the display, one of which is made of 52,000 cubes of wood inlaid to create an interesting design of dogs and dragons. His rural models include small carved an- imals and people in work scenes around the farm, traveling to new homes across country, and even enjoying the horse races. From his early carved canes to his intri- cate inlaid tabletops and rural models, his pieces truly are treasures to enjoy. The exhibition is on display at the Huron County Museum until August 4, 2009.
