The question wasn't what is in the bag
as much as who made it.
In addressing Huron County's com-
mittee of the whole, March 11, Council-
lor Max Demaray (Howick) asked why
a presentation made on behalf ,of Huron
County's Good Food Box program at
county council's March session included
a bag made in Chi-
na.
Warden Ken Oke
says county coun-
cil would have to
change its bylaws to
direct county depart-
ments to purchase
bags that are locally
supplied before such
matters are an issue.
Coun. James Fer-
gusson (Bluewa-
ter), who chairs the
COW, says the bags,
which contained a
number of locally -
grown and produced
items, might have
been supplied by the
Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture, Food
and Rural Affairs,
meaning their origin
falls out of the coun-
ty's purview.

been taken out of context by a county rr "That is the intent, to be prepared,"
said Adams.
On the suggestion of Johnston, the
architect item was removed from the
report to allow the other work to move
forward. The COW endorsed Johnston's
motion, which must later be supported
by council.
RESOLUTION ENDORSED
The county COW is adding its voice to
a Huron County Federation of Agricul-
ture resolution, which asks the province
to review its methodologies in valuing
farmland as it pertains to farm -property
taxation issues.
Coun. Bert Dykstra (Central Huron)
moved endorsement of the resolution
while Coun. John Bezaire (Central
Huron) seconded it.
NIX THE CROSSWALK
The COW vetoed a suggestion to
help cover the cost of a traffic -engi-
neering study for a possible cross-
walk in Belgrave since the county
highways department doesn't believe
one.is necessary.
Coun. Dorothy Kelly (Morris Turn -
berry) was the only COW member
present to express support for the
crosswalk.
resident, Oke noted while he is not op-
posed to wind -turbine projects, he does
hope the province will ensure the proper
research is conducted to ensure they are
safe.
"The stupidity is just going nonstop,"
he says in reference to Internet post-
ings.
Coun. Neil Vincent (North Huron) says
the county resident's letter "upset" him.
He adds that alternative -energy produc-
tion methods must continue to be inves-
tigated and that there are concerns with
the grid as it stands since some trans-
mission lines are carrying more power
than their certification spells out.
HOLD THE DRAWINGS
Coun. Dave Johnston (Bluewater)
wants to see a temporary hold on draw-
ings for the county court -house build-
ing's basement until tenants have signed
on the dotted line.
In noting the county is seeking the ser-
vices of an architect to map out a blue-
print for the basement, Johnston says
such a move doesn't make sense until
there are tenants on board.

Bv the book
A book commemorating the life of J.W. (Jack) McLaren (former resident of
Benmiller) was donated to the Goderich Library by the author John McLaren (son
of Jack McLaren) and presented to Karen Blackwell, of the library, by his Great
Grand Daughter Kelly McLaren (photo) on Sunday, March 15. The book entitled
"J.W." captures the remarkable life of Jack McLaren as an artist, author, play-
wright and dedicated family man and focuses on the many facets of his family
life and career. A new book being written by author Shawn Henshall will cover
the professional side of Jack McLaren's life with a focus on Mr. McLaren's
extended involvement in the Arts and Letters Club, his membership with the
Ontario Society of Artists, and his later and most artistically productive years as
an oil painter and playwright in Benmiller.
