Huron Bruce
MP Ben Lobb
said in mak-
ing the pre-
sentation on
behalf of Di-
ane Finley,
Minister of
Human Resources and Skills
Development in Goderich Sat-
urday.
"The government of Canada
is proud to support seniors in
strengthening our communi-
ties and building our country,"
Lobb said. "This project will
encourage seniors in Goderich
to continue sharing their skills,
wisdom and experience to ben-
efit others."
Explaining that New Hori-
zons grants are helping to en-
rich the lives of seniors in the
riding in various ways, Lobb
cited a Kincardine program that
is helping seniors with various
components of on-line learn-
ing and remarked that since his
mother has crossed the thresh-
old of senior life, she has been
engaged in meaningful pro-
grams through the Betty Card -
no Centre.

Huron -Bruce MP. Ben Lobb, presented a cheque for $25,000 to the
Rueben R. Sallows Gallery to allow exhibits to be featured in five
locations across the county. The grant, offered through the
Government of Canada's New Horizons Seniors Program, will allow
for the training of seniors to deliver programs and share skills, wis-
dom and experiences. Sallow Gallery board of directors vice-presi-
dent, Carole Broadley accepts the grant cheque from Lobb along
with gallery development officer, Jodi Jerome.

Officer, Jodi Jerome, said that while some Sallows
photographs may be used in the off-site exhibits, she
was excited that the grant will help train volunteers
to carry out various aspects of work involved in the
setup of displays.
"I am excited about the new grant and we are hop-
ing to work with seniors and youth in five towns
across the county with exhibits," she said. "We will
be able to train volunteers and be able to apply those
skills to other projects. Setting up exhibits takes a lot
of work."
The grant means that seniors will be trained to edu-
cate the public through a series of touring exhibits,
outreach and activities in smaller rural communities.
The investment falls under the Community Participa-
tion and Leadership component of the New Horizons
for Seniors Program, which encourages seniors to
continue to play an important role in the communities
by helping those in need, providing leadership and
sharing their knowledge and skills with others.
The New Horizons program has funded over 4,200
projects Lobb said, adding that it was important in
this case to help preserve local history and make an
important connection with a younger generation.
"Sallows captured life at the time and we have had
great talents in this area like Jack McLaren, known
for his paintings," Lobb said. "It is also important that
young people across Huron connect with
the past."
Trained volunteers will be able to teach
as much as they learn in these participato-
ry sessions, Jerome explained, adding that
the skills acquired in this project will be
transferable to other community projects.
"The message we strive to communicate
with this project is that people's stories are
valued and important and have a place in
our communities and nation," she said.
The Sallows Gallery is currently featur-
ing photographs of the Algonquin Park
area, many of which inspired the work
of the Group of .Seven artists, including
Tom Thompson. Beginning May 5, a re-
furbished gallery will re -open with an
exhibit entitled; Boats, Train and Things
with Wheels. The exhibit will be featured
through to August.
