Square could go pedestrian -only

Goderich Town Council is look-
ing to promote the walkability of
the community by making one of
its most identifiable trademarks
pedestrian -only.
Deputy -mayor John Grace
asked the BIA's Tom Fincher to
consider closing The Square off
to vehicular traffic on Saturdays,
creating a pedestrian mall down-
town.
"We'd like to build the idea of
a walkable community," Grace
said. "Would you consider doing
it at least once or twice and see
how it goes?"
However, there were questions
about the validity of closing traf-
fic lanes on weekends when no
events were scheduled for down-
town.
Coun. Ray Hurd, however, was
all for it.
"I would encourage you and
your group to
(do this) and
create some
excitement
and adven-
.ture in our
downtown
place," he
said.

future of pedestrian traffic in the
core.
The move could also potentially
cut down on vehicles parking on
the courthouse lawn during spe-
cial events he said.
The constant vehicular confu-
sion, particularly during tour-
ist season, could be curbed or
cured, Grace suggested, by mak-
ing downtown a place where
people can walk freely, leisurely
and safely to their destination of
choice.
Goderich special events coordi-
nator Wanda Keith said this year's
Santa Claus Parade was a good
example of how less traffic makes
a much better experience for the
public.
Having the parade run back-
wards around The Square this
winter made it impossible for im-
patient parade -watchers to follow
the procession after it was done,
she said.
"We thought it was much safer
after the parade - cars couldn't
follow," she said. "Just because
we chagned the direction."
If the street were completely
closed to traffic, she said safety
would bring people out and shop-
ping would keep them there.

For those who like to "park in

reaction from Town Hall could

looks to make Goderich a more

downtown safe for pedestrians.
RENUMERATION RATES
Taxes aren't the only thing jump-
ing two per cent this year. Council
passed By -Law No. 21 at a spe-
cial February meeting, increas-
ing renumeration for members of
council as well as board and com-
mittee members by proxy.
The position of mayor comes
with a paycheque of $22,134.74;
deputy -mayor, $14,033.82 and
councillors will earn $9,842.83.
Per diem rateswill be $129 for
a full-day and $72 for a half day
for council members.
According to the by-law, one-
third of the renumeration amount
is considered expense pay.
Meanwhile, unused vacation
and sick pay for town employ-
ees will mean additional costs of
approximately $60,000, as anni-
versary dates put employees into
higher rates of compensation.
FEBRUARY FIGURES
In the month of February the
fire department responded to a
total of six calls in the Town of
Goderich, including one fire, two
search -and -rescue, two motor -
vehicle accidents and one carbon
monoxide alarm.
The fire department also en-
gaged in a public education blitz,
encouraging families to practice
their escape plans on Family Day.
