The final figure is in: Goderich
is looking at an increase of 1.9 per
cent on their tax bills after final-
izing the budget March 10.
The increase is in part due to
increased property assessments,
which took place across Ontario
last year, and kept in check through
a mix of cuts and reserves.

The average assessment in-
crease in Goderich will see h use-
holders paying an average of $60
dollars more on their tax. bill. Of
that, $25.50 would be the town's
portion.
The county portion would in-
crease 2.59 per cent, or $26.41
and while education rates haven't
been finalized by the province,
the rate of increase looks to be
2.03 per cent, or $8.49.
Treasurer Judy Kay estimated a
surplus of $301,000 for the year,
money she said council could use
to offset the increase in taxation.
However, the amount of the sur-
plus is still subject to audit.
A significant drain to the town's
resources is the assessment set-
tlement for Goderich Elevators
which, at $254,000, is "a huge hit,"

according to mayor Deb Shewfelt.
That amount is for 2003-2008.
The tax assessment appeal is
covered $166,766 from reserves,
with $88,000 coming from the
year-end surplus.
Audits of the Mid -Huron Land-
fill and Goderich Hydro are yet to
be conducted.
The final figure for. the 2009
budget is $6,089,466.
