Mitchell Advocate editor, Andy
Bader got his start working for
the YCW daily news in 1984. .
ANDY BADER - Editor, Mitch-
ell Advocate, Former YCW daily
reporter
. While many NHL-ers got their
start on the ice as peewees in Young
Canada week, the tournament also
served as a catalyst for careers in
print. The Young Canada Week
Daily News brought inany aspiring
reporters to Goderich
"It was my first ever experience
with reporting," Bader said of his
tenure at YCW. "I didn't even know
where Goderich was at the tune."
A student at Conestoga College,
Bader volunteered to come down
for the week-long project, setting
up shop at the Memorial Arena for
the 1984 YCW.
"All we had to do was sit and
write game reports," he recalled.
"There was a makeshift couple of
tables up there (at the Memorial)
and a few computers as if we were
in the press box."
At the time, he said the reporters
- all journalism students - worked
late nights and early mornings
capturing each day's hockey high-
lights.
"I was covering wall-to-wall
hockey," he said. "It was cool that
I got to sit there and watch hockey
and report on it."
Graduating in June of the same
year, Bader said that one week in
the YCW newsroom 25 years ago
led to a career in print, ashe'sbeen
in the ink ever since.
DAVE MERIAM - YCW
CHAMP, 1996/YCW referee
A familiar figure still on Goderich
ice, Pirates' centre Dave Meriam
said his team's 1996 YCW victory
seems like a long time ago.
. However, he said he still recalls
the rush of the crowd and the are-
na full of hometown fans at every
Goderich game.
"It was a big thing for us," he
said. "It was quite the experience
with the old arena being packed."
Meriam's victory came after a
16 -year drought for Goderich in the
`B' Division • finals, however they
sent Walkerton packing and kept

the Reg McGee trophy in home-
town hands.
"It was quite incredible really,"
he said. "Especially for the team
since they hadn't won since 1980."
Meriam said the 1996 peewee
team was a talented bunch, with
five kids moving on to 'AAA'
hockey the year after the win.
He said what sticks with him
most is the strong support of the
community when the home teams
take the ice. '
"I always used to remember, even
when I worked at the rink, it was
always really neat to see the whole
town come out to YCW watching
the Goderich team play," he said.
"Even now you see the community
come out. It's big... really good for
the kids."
Meriam still laces up
for Young Canada Week,
though he has long -since
traded in his peewee jersey
for ref's stripes.
He said he hopes the
Midget Reps well ahead in round robin
The Goderich Midget Rep Sailors are are sailing through
a WOAA round-robin against Mount Forest and Kincar-
dine.
Goderich won their first two games against Mount For-
est and travelled to Kincardine on Saturday night to play
the Kinucks.
Book -ending the game was Tyler Million who opened
and closed the scoring in a 3-2 final for Goderich.
The action was back and forth in the first period with
the first whistle not being blown until seven minutes into
the game.
Million notched the first and only goal of the period as-
sisted by Coy Kulich. However Kincardine tied things up
on a power play goal in the second period.
•
Within the first minute of the third, Goderich had three
boys in the penalty box. The Sailors did an awesome job of
penalty -killing and Shawn Gethke make some spectacular
saves.
With only a few seconds left before Goderich was back
at full force, Kincardine got their second power -play goal
of the night putting them ahead by a goal.
Kulich tied it up at 2-2 for the end of the second.
Once again the third period was back and forth action
but Million clenched the deal, scoring on a tough angled
shot giving Goderich a 3-2 victory. Goderich will play
Kincardine once again to close off the round-robin. Times
were unavailable as of press time. -
Tweens bring gold home from Niagara Falls
What a weekend. What a tournament. Congratulations,
The Goderich Tweens captured the gold medal in a 6-3
grudge match against Tillsonburg this past weekend at a
Niagara Falls tournament.
The division the girls were placed in proved to be very
competitive. On Friday night they played Tiillsonbuig and
looked like they had things in the bag with a 6-2 lead with
just over five minutes left in the game, but Tillsonburg dug
in and scored four goals to come away with a 6-6 tie.
Saturday they played Caledonia in what was a different
game for the Tweens. Caledonia played a unique system
that tripped the girls up a bit, but in the end the girls solved
the system and won 5-4.
Bright and early Sunday morning the girls were facing
another new team in Jordan. This was a very fast -paced
even game fat ended in a 2-2 tie, putting the girls into the
championship..gatne. a few hours latex against Tillsonbutg..
who also advanced to the finals.
You could tell from the start of the game that fatigue
was not going to take a gold medal away from the girls as
they played hard leading 4-1 after the first period.
The girls came out scoring just 22 seconds into the
second period making it 5-1. However, Tillsonburg came
back with two goals to make it 5-3 with just under 10 min-
utes to play.
Goderich did not want to see a repeat of their previ-
ous game with Tillsonburg and took control of the game,
playing great defence and waiting for their opportunity to
score again.
Despite running into penalty trouble, the girls scored
short handed to take a 6-3 lead with under eight minutes
to go and killed offa five -on -three with under five minutes
left that proved to be the clincher. The game ended in a 6-3
gold medal win. Great going girls. You deserved to win
this tournament.
