Young Canada Week creates many fond memories Geratd Creces signal -star staff The grandaddy of all peewee hockey tournaments, Young Canada Week will once again bring the spirit of sports- manship to Goderich ice this Friday_ At a time when the fate of local pee- wee hockey was dire at best, Nip Whet- stone - widely revered as the father of Young Canada Week - made arrange- ments for a one -day' tournament in 1950 featuring 12 area teams. Since then, Young Canada Week has exploded into a week-long event that at one time boasted international atten- dance. Manning the ever-expanding event was not an easy task, and the Goderich Lions Club came on -board to to help create the event Goderich enjoys to this day. From feeding and housing out-of- town players to scheduling ice time for thousands of teams over the years to fundraising, organizing, publicizing, recruiting and so much more, the Lions have a legacy of dedication and hard work with YCW. There are very few hockey players in this town that haven't gone through the rite of passage that is Young Canada Week, and the experience is one that ties together generations. The Signal -Star caught up with YCW alumni of decades past to help define the spirit of such an ingrained part of Goderich's sports history. YCW was always a special time of the year for me growing up right across from the old arena on McDonald Street. As a two-time participant, I still visu- alize the smoke -hazed arena packed to the rafters with horns, bells and boister- ous locals.
