The Goderich Pirates exploded on the scoreboard Sunday night, with a 11-8, do-or-die win over the Lucan-Ilderton Jets. From left, Dave Meriam raises his stick to
teammate Matt MacPhee as he scores his second of three for the night; Sean Burton rejoices as he adds a goal to his five assists; MacPhee gets the crowd pumped
after one of his three goals and Dylan Stokes stuffs one in to make it a 5-3 game in the second period. For the complete game report see page 31.

The grandaddy of all peewee hockey
tournaments, Young Canada Week will
once again bring the spirit of sports-
manship to Goderich ice this Friday_
At a time when the fate of local pee-
wee hockey was dire at best, Nip Whet-
stone - widely revered as the father of
Young Canada Week - made arrange-
ments for a one -day' tournament in 1950
featuring 12 area teams.
Since then, Young Canada Week has
exploded into a week-long event that
at one time boasted international atten-
dance.
Manning the ever-expanding event
was not an easy task, and the Goderich
Lions Club came on -board to to help
create the event Goderich enjoys to this
day.
From feeding and housing out-of-
town players to scheduling ice time
for thousands of teams over the years
to fundraising, organizing, publicizing,
recruiting and so much more, the Lions
have a legacy of dedication and hard
work with YCW.
There are very few hockey players
in this town that haven't gone through
the rite of passage that is Young Canada
Week, and the experience is one that
ties together generations.
The Signal -Star caught up with YCW
alumni of decades past to help define
the spirit of such an ingrained part of
Goderich's sports history.

"Congratulations to the Goderich Li-
ons Club and the Town of Goderich on
the 60th Anniversary of Young Canada
Week. YCW was always a special time
of the year for me growing up right
across from the old arena on McDonald
Street.
As a two-time participant, I still visu-
alize the smoke -hazed arena packed to
the rafters with horns, bells and boister-
ous locals.
