For more games and times,
see the summary inside the
sports pages (29-34).
Worsell said between
scheduling the games, re-
cruiting teams and making
sure all things YCW are set to
go, the Lions have had their
hands full.
"The club has 85 members
and everybody participates
to some extent either doing
planning or participation or
work over the week," he said.
"There's been - a commitment
over the years that this is a
worthwhile program to sup-
port youth and support par-
ticipation in sports and give
kids something to do."
There are 48. teams this
year, and Worsell said many
are returning guests.
The tournament has be-
come synonymous with pee-
wee hockey, and Worsell said
part of the allure is due to its
long history of great games
and team spirit that spans
generations.
"For some people it's got-
ten to be a tradition," he said.
"It's gratifying to talk to peo-
ple over the years who have
played in YCW and now their
kids are playing."
In addition to the on -ice ac-
tion, Worsell said the famous
chuck -a -puck is back, with
24 bicycles being given out
over the week.
Lion Alvin McGee and
committee have also combed
the YCW archives and will
have a display of tournament
nostalgia for fans to peruse at
the MRC.
New this year will be an
alumni " game featuring the
current Goderich Junior 'C'
Sailors lineup taking on Sail-
. ors from years past who have
also taken part in Young Can-
ada Week.
Junior 'C' general manager
and tournament referee -in -
chief, Ken Crawford said
players were excited to be
coming back to help support
YCW.
Included on the lineup are
associate players from the
Midget Rep team, and Craw-
ford said this both serves to
thank them for their work
with the Sailors as well as
give a sneak peak on pros-
pects for next year's team.
The alumni game is Satur-
day, March 14 at the MRC at
7p.m. Admission is free.
Meanwhile, the YMCA
will be hosting week-long
activites for the March Break
crowd, and on Tuesday morn-
ing from 9:30-12 at the Me-
morial Arena, Future Pro will
be holding a free goalie clinic
for YCW players and anyone
else interested in improving
their performance in front of
the twine.
Worsell said the Lions
will be holding an auction
at the MRC Tuesday, featur-
ing a wide array of hockey
paraphernalia among other
things.
From the community stand-
point, he said many local
buinesses have been incred-
ibly supportive of the tour-
nament, sponsoring ice time,
donating prizes and offer-
ing discounts for the YCW
crowd.
With the warm weather
coming soon, Worsell said
YCW helps bring an official
start to spring in Goderich.
"Everybody kind of looks
at YCW as winter's over," he
said. •
Hungry players will be
happy to know Dirk and
Mary Wolterbeek are doing
the meals again this year at
the Memorial Arena, offering
home -cooked meals for all
the teams and coaches.
Worsell offered his thanks
to Ken Crawford, Paul Kelly,
Kevin Merriam and all Lions
and community volunteers
who "put in countless hours
to make this thing a go."
