In a presentation to county council March 4, replete with goodie bags in- cluding locally grown rutabagas, OMA - FRA representative Jane Muegge and unit spokeswoman Janis Dunbar out- lined the perks of the program, which is delivered monthly to 11 locales. The idea behind the program, says Muegge, is multi -pronged. One aspect is to provide county residents with a nutri- tious array of locally grown produce at a reasonable price, the second is to sup- port local farmers and the third is to edu- cate consumers about the types of foods grown here. "We have some customers who.like to buy it because it's like Christmas every month," notes Dunbar. There are still some myths floating around the Good Food Box program, says Muegge, citing the inaccurate per- ception that it's a subsidized program as one example. Muegge says program subscribers pay $15 per month on the first Thursday of each. month and pick up their box, re- plete with educational brochures includ- ing recipes, on the third Thursday. She notes a new marketing brochure, high- lighting the benefits of the program, is being rolled out. Dunbar reports the program enjoys a great deal of community support with some places, including St Anne's Cath- olic Secondary School in Clinton, or- dering more than a dozen boxes every month. "Lead by example, encourage your municipalities to participate," enthuses Dunbar. Muegge adds that Moore's Foodland in Clinton supplies the program with specialty items, like oranges and banan- as and out -of -season produce, when the need arises at cost. In all 2,500 boxes were sold in 2008, contributing $30,000 to the local econo- my. The program is volunteer driven and accumulated 1,300 volunteer hours last year.
