Healthy
Hearts provides local relief
Has anyone you know had a heart attack or by-
pass surgery or have high blood pressure or high
cholesterol and at risk for cardiac disease? Cardiac-
dise.ase statistics are alarming and rising. Mayor
Deb Shewfelt a quadruple by-pass survivor him-
self says Huron County residents are fortunate to
have Healthy Hearts (HH), a cardiac rehab pro-
gram dedicated to just those people you know. He
says that HH has encouraged him to take to heart
the importance of looking after his heart.

COUNTY OF HURON
HURON " MUNICIPAL CLASS ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
c; 0 t; N_ v FOR REHABILITATION OF BENMILLER BRIDGE
NOTICE OF COMMENCEMENT
THE PROJECT:
The County of Huron is planning to carry out improvements to Benmiller Bridge, which spans
Sharpe's Creek along Londesboro Road (County Road 31) in the community of Benmiller (as
illustrated on the accompanying key plan). This rehabilitation project would involve the 'replacement
of the existing aluminum railings with solid concrete parapet walls and steel railings.
At this time, it is anticipated that the bridge rehabilitation would be completed during the 2009
construction season. The affected road section of Londesboro Road would remain open during the
construction period, however lane restrictions would be necessary.
tHE ENVIRONMENTAL SCREENING PROCESS:
The planning for this project is following the environmental. screening process set out for Schedule
B activities under the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) document. The
purpose of the screening process is to identify any potential environmental impacts associated
with the project and to plan for appropriate rnitigation of any impacts. The process includes
consultation with the public, stakeholders and government review agencies.
PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT:
The consultation program for this Class
EA includes several opportunities for
public Involvement. For the initial
phase of the program, public input will
be received until March 31, 2009.
Additional opportunities for comment
will be provided as the process
proceeds.
Any comments collected in conjunction
with this Class EA will be maintained
on file for use during the project and
may be included in project
documentation. With the exception of
personal information, all comments will
become part of the public record.

cardiac patients went to
London for treatment, stress
test, and six months of ses-
sions at the London Cardiac
Rehabilitation Centre. This
ment three hours of driving
for recovering cardiac patients.
At -risk patients were on their
.Own.
In his bi-monthly Goderich
clinics, Dr: E. Turton, a
London cardiac specialist,
realized that distance kept
many patients from consistent
follow-up rehabilitation, so he
decided to bring rehab to the
patient. His wife Michelle
became .the first director of an
exercise program known as
Healthy Hearts" (HH).
From one class in Gord
McManus' Health Club on
East Street to more space and
classes at 50 Stanley Street,
HH has grown to eight bi-
weekly classes at the YMCA.
Helen Sabo new chair of the
HH board of directors was one.
of the earliest female partici-
pants. She reports that active
participants now number more
than 160 and comments on the
increasing number of women. Program Director
Ellie. Brewster notes that over 800 people have
been seen by. HH since it began.
Each participant has been medically referred to
the HH program and has an initial stress test and
.blood work before joining. Sessions begin with
taking blood pressure and pulse rate, followed by
warm-up exercises, cardiac cycling, weights, and
stretches.
Three nurses with cardiac training,. always alert
for any sign of distress, facilitate the classes. They
are also a resource to the participants, answering
question's and educating them in self-care, healthy
eating, and medication management. In addition.
physicians monitor two classes each week.
Participants pay $40 a month and can remain with
HH for as long as they need its support.
The 13 -member HH board c:pmprises 1 -IH par-
ticipants and non -participants from medical and
non-medical communities in Huron County. Many
original participants are also long-time Board
members. People like. Bill McLean, Judd Milburn.
Ernie Tafeit, Mike Rogers and Malcolm Harrison
have worked to keep HH a thriving, unique Huron
County service.
Bill McLean recalls the Rotary and -Lions Clubs'•
generous donations .for the original bikes and
telemetry. Sabo says four new bikes have been
purchased and four more are needed. She points
out the generosity of the community, AMGH, busi-
nesses, and industry who have always willingly
helped with funds for major purchases and kept
HH a vital contributor to heart health in Huron
County. Sabo also commends participants and staff
who enthusiastically support fund-raising events
and especially the annual Cardiac Rehabilitation
Walk of Life walk-a-thon that will be on May 23,
2009.
Mayor Shewfelt says HH is the best such pro-
gram in Ontario. It is the only one in Huron
County. HH has helped him and many others to
take their heart health to heart.
",Health is a state o, f complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit.
