HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 2009-03-11, Page 3Goderich Signal -Star, Wednesday, March 11, 2009 - Page A3 Warden offers kudos to county's initiatives, plan ceryl M•a!h sun media County Warden Ken Oke reports February was a "busy month" that saw him attending a number of events on behalf of the county, including the Ontario Economic Develop- ment Awards in Toronto where both he and HBDC president Pam Stanley accepted an award for the county's strategic plan. During his monthly address to county council on March 4, Oke notes the event Police make arrests in connection to break and enter On March 4, investigators into the Din- ney's Furniture store break and enter gathered information that let to a search warrant being executed at a London residence on March 5. Numerous items were located both inside the home and in the garage on the property. Slightly less than half of the missing items were recovered. As a result, a 28 -year-old male of London was arrested and charged with one count of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime and one count of Breach of Probation. He re- mains in police custody. A 53 -year old female and 32 -year-old male of London were also' arrested. Each was charged with one count of Possession of Prop- erty Obtained by Crime. Both will answer to their charges on May 4 in the Exeter Court. BREAK AND ENTER TO FURNITURE STORE (South Huron, ON) Sometime during the night of February 25-26, unknown suspects gained entry to Dinney's Furniture in Exeter. Once inside, the suspects, loaded up the Din- ney's Delivery truck and left with an unknown quantity of furniture. The stolen cube van was located on the weekend in London. The inves- tigation remains ongoing and police are con- sidering that this event may be related to the Sears break & enter in Goderich last week. RACER NABBED On March 6, at approximately 2:30 p.m. a Huron OPP officer was patrolling on Belgrave Road in Ashfield Colborne Wawanosh when the officer observed a Chevrolet Malibu trav- elling at 144 kph in the posted 90 kph zone. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was charged with Racing. As a result, a 68 -year- old resident of Ashfield Colborne Wawanosh was charged with Racing and had his driver's licence suspended for seven days. The vehicle he was driving was towed and impounded for seven days also. He will answer to the charge in Goderich Provincial Court. SECOND RACER NABBED . On March 6, at 5:30 p.m. a traffic stop was initiated on Bluewater Hwy when a Huron OPP officer observed a vehicle travelling at 132 kph in a posted 80 kph zone. A traffic stop was initiated and an 18 -year-old male resident of Ashfield Colborne Wawanosh was charged with Racing. As a result, the male had his drivers' licence suspended for seven days and the vehicle he was driving was impounded for seven days. He will an- swer to the charge in Goderich Provincial Courl j1tOflI'7.4 , marked the first time a rural municipality won it. Oke notes the county also earned kudos for both its Doors Open initiative and its new branding project. Further events on Oke's itinerary included the Good Roads convention, a South West Economic Alliance session, and the Huron County Federation of Agriculture's annual MP/MPP Luncheon in Clinton. STEPPING DOWN Coun. John Bezaire (Central Huron) re- ports it is with great regret that he is unable to fulfill his duties as council representative on the Huron Perth Children's Aid Society's board. "It's certainly something I was looking forward to but at this point in time it doesn't look feasible," he says. Council appointed Coun. John Grace (Goderich) to the spot. UNDER CONSIDERATION Coun. Bill Siemon is urging the county to look at more cost-effective solutions in deal- ing with the bank failure near the Huronview facility in Clinton. Siemon says he favours erosion -control methods over a road -reconstruction project. TURN TO THE PAGE Coun. Tim Collyer (Central Huron) intro- duced Matt Adams as the council page for the March session. Matt, the son of county CAO Larry Ad- ams and wife Janet, is a 12 -year-old student at St. Mary's school in Goderich where he's enrolled in the French -immersion program.
