RAWSON
Last month I celebrated my 90th birthday. It
was quite a surprise to find my picture in the
paper, and as a result, I received many lovely
notes and cards from so many friends. And,
wherever I went, everyone greeted me with best
wishes. I also enjoyed family get-togethers, a
birthday party hosted by the Healthy Hearts
Group, a reception at Goderich Place for those
residents celebrating February birthdays, and
special recognition from the Town of Goderich.
To all, thanks for making my birthday so
memorable. I had a great time. Earl --lOx

Do you know a special nurse who de-
serves recognition?
HealthKick Huron and the Huron -Perth
Healthcare Providers' Group are pairing
up to celebrate Huron and Perth nurses
with a healthcare inspiration awards night
on March 31 in Seaforth.
"We want to get the word out to get as
many nominations as possible. We have a
lot of great nurses and a lot of great things
going on because of the way nurses make
a difference," says Cathie Schalk, of the
Huron -Perth Healthcare Providers' Group.
Schalk says the healthcare providers'
group was looking for another way to pro-
mote recruitment and retention of nurses
and decided that more appreciation has to
be expressed for the RNs, RPNs, PSWs
and healthcare aides working in the area.
"We want to boost morale and make the
general public aware there's a huge short-
age of nurses but that it's a very valued
profession to be in," she says.
Laura Overholt, manager of HealthKick
Huron, says the idea was one her organiza-
tion felt was worthy of funding.
"There is likely a nurse in every com-
munity that someone wants to honour.
We're really supportive of the idea," says
Overholt.
As part of the nomination process,
which is open to everyone in Huron and
Perth Counties, Schalk is hoping to learn
the stories of local nurses and how they've
helped in hospitals, nursing homes and
community care.
"You think people know you value them
but you have to say the words so they'll

know it. Nurses are very committed indi-
viduals and when you see what they do
from day to day, they're phenomenal," she
says.
The awards will recognize nine recipi-
ents with one overall ".healthcare champi-
on" who "really stands out," says Schalk.
She adds that the award will include
a gift that will encourage nurses to take
some time to pamper themselves.
."When you're in the caregiving busi-
ness, you have to take care of yourself,"
she says.
The award night will be held at the new
Huron East Health Centre on March 31 at
7 p.m. and Overholt and Schalk are hoping
the building will be packed with nominees
and their supporters.
Nomination forms are available at lo-
cal hospitals, healthcare facilities and on
