"Registrations were a little slower for older groups, like the U16 and U18 [leagues] this year," explained John Cove, president of Goderich Mivor Soccer, "But we have a lot of tykes, U8 and•U12." Cove explained that three days of registration saw just over 300 enrollments, down nearly 25 per cent from 400 last year. While there has . been quite a drop, Cove explained that Mi- nor Soccer is possibly looking at another registration date, as members of the executive have already been approached by more than 30 families, saying that they missed the sign-up. Financial constraints may also be a cause, but Cove stated that soccer is inexpensive com- pared to other investments for the summer. Cove explained that any families who are experiencing financial problems can con- tact Goderich Minor Soccer through their website http:// • 'ww.goderichsoccer.com or hotline, (519) 524-5272. Help may be avaiulable, and all calls will responded to by a member of Goderich Minor Soccer. As for the leagues in town, there has been significant growth this year, with two new high calibre teams s.tarting. Goderich has only had one London City . League Team in the past, a teen girls team. London City soccer is more competitive than that normally represented by the Minor Soc- cer Association. Goderich is normally part of the North Huron Soccer League, which plays team from Bayfield, Blyth, Brussels, Clin- ton, Lucknow, Seaforth, St. Columban and Wingham. The new league plays teams from centres such as London, Sar- nia, Owen Sound, St. Thomas, Tillsonburg, Woodstock and Waterloo. This year, Goderich will see two new teen teams enter the highly -regarded' league. Cove also mentioned that, aside from a shortage of play- ers, coaches and members of the executive are in high de- mand. "Our. younger teams are still looking for coaches, and train- ing will be available for them," he said. "And a lot of our ex- ecutives either no longer have children in soccer, or won't af- ter this year, 'and we're looking Atoms un two in nlavoffs against Tiverton The Goderich Atom AE team saw play-off action twice last week with two games against Tiverton on February 26 and 28.
