Break and enters in Exeter
Goderich may be linked
The van that was used during a Valentine's
Day theft at a Goderich business has been re-
covered.
Huron OPP Const. Joanna Van Mierlo said
that a cube van was located by London Police
on Feb. 17 at an undisclosed location in the
city.
The van was reported stolen from Strick-
land Toyota in Goderich in mid February, and
police believe the van was taken prior to the
break and enter and theft at Sears in Goder-
ich.
The theft occurred in the early hours of Feb.
14, when police believe unknown suspects
pried open the north rear door of Sears, ren-
dered the store's alarm system inoperable, and
"went shopping."
Thieves made off with goods totaling ap-
proximately $40,000, including home elec-
tronics, appliances, and a safe.
"It's a fairly big deal with that amount of
product," said Van Mierlo. "That's a lot of
goods."
She added that the weight and size of many
of the items taken may indicate more than one
suspect, calling it a "safe assessment."
Police believe that the theft took place be-
tween 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m.
The incident is still under investigation, and
police are not releasing any further details at
this time.
CRIME SPREE?
Huron police are considering another Huron
County break and enter that occured in Exeter
last week may be related to a similar incident
in Goderich.
Sometime during the night of Feb. 25, un-
known suspects gained entry to Dinney's Fur-
niture m Exeter. Once inside, they loaded up
the Dinney's Delivery truck and left with an
unknown quantity of furniture.
The stolen Disney's cube van was located
on the weekend in London. The investigation
remains ongoing.

ATTEMPTED FLEE
An Ashfield-Colbome-Wawanosh resident
led Huron OPP on a wild chase following a
sobriety check on the weekend.
On Feb. 27 at approximately 10:30 p.m. an
officer attempted to stop a motor vehicle in
Dungannon to check the sobriety of the driver.
The vehicle accelerated away from the officer
and into a private driveway. The officer fol-
lowed the male driver into a large garage after
he ran from his vehicle.
As soon as the officer made contact with
the driver, he observed the driver to be im-
paired by alcohol. The male was arrested for
impaired driving and was taken to the Huron
Detachment where he met with a qualified
breathalyzer technician. The male provided
two samples of his breath and both tests con-
firmed he had over the legal limit of alcohol in
his system.
As a result of the investigation, a 55 -year-
old ACW resident has been charged with one
count of Impaired Driving and one count of
Drive With Over 80 Milligrams of Alcohol.
He will appear in Goderich Court on May 4 to
answer to the charges.
ASSAULT BY SALT
An employee at Smith Packaging in Huron
East ended up in hospital last week after being
assaulted with a bag of salt.
On Feb. 24, at approximately 5 a.m., Huron
OPP officers were dispatched to the packaging
company to respond to a male who had been
injured and was unconscious. Police arrived
on scene to discover that a fight had occurred
between two employees, one of whom was
knocked unconscious. The victim was taken
to hospital and treated for non -life threatening
injuries. Investigation revealed that a fight be-
gan when one male threw a bag of salt at the
other involved male. A 19 -year-old resident of
Huron East has been charged with one count
of Assault Causing Bodily Harm. He will an-
swer to the charge in Goderich Court on April
6. The investigation remains ongoing and fur-
ther charges are expected.
THIEF MAKES AMMENDS
Conscience caught up to an ex -thief re-
cently when' he made ammends with his 2006
theft victim.
On Feb. 24, a Huron OPP officer spoke
with a co-owner of Huron Tractor in Blyth.
The man reported that a male had come to
the business and given him $2,000 cash and
an apology letter. The male who attended was
delivering the letter .on behalf of an acquain-
tance of his who had stolen a garden tractor
from the business in May 2006.
