Overturned decision gives Goderich Petites ringette gold
As reported in last weeks paper the
Goderich Petite Ringette team trav-
elled to Richmond Hill to take part in
a tournament and were awarded the sil-
ver medal...
Well, in fact, it was to be gold!
Goderich dominated their division at
the tournament including the gold med-
al match that progressed without inci-
dent, until near the end of the game. In
the game's dying seconds, Goderich
leading 4-3, the Richmond Hill team
pulled their goalie and made one final
rush at the Goderich net. The clock
counted down to
zero. amd it •ap-

ich had won! However about four sec-
onds after the buzzer sounded a goal
had been scored.
Officials at the game counted it, ty-
ing up the game.
It was clear to the coaches, parents
and even the Richmond Hill parents
Goderich had clearly won. An overtime
period was needed.
Early on, and only nine seconds
apart, Goderich was penalized twice,
resulting in Richmond Hill scoring and
taking gold.
However, Monday morning follow-
ing the match, coach Todd Stanbury
recieved word from the President of
Ringette Richmond Hill, who attended
the game, that the decision had been re-
versed and Goderich was awarded the
gold medal.
Novices add to Goderich ringette gold
The Goderich Novice ringette
team won all four of their games
" to win the `B' Minor division at
a recent Richmond Hill tourna-
ment.
After some pre -game jitters in
their opener against the home
team, the Goderich girls got off
to a great start and pulled away
from Richmond Hill with a 9-2
win.
The Petites added to the deaf-
ening noise of the crowd by en-
thusiastically cheering on their
younger counterparts.
The second game was Saturday
morning against Markham. Early
in the game the Goderich girls
knew that they were up against
some very good goaltending.
The Markham netminder stopped
shot after shot after shot.
Persistence paid off with the
Goderich girls finishing the
game with a 6-3 win.

Saturday afternoon had the
Novice girls supporting the Pe-
tite team, as we loudly cheered
them on in their first game and
victory of the tournament.
The third game for the Novice
girls on Saturday night had them
up against Markham again for a
do-or-die game. Our girls knew
that they would really have to
work to get the ring past the sol-
id Markham goalie. As it worked
out, the Petites were also play-
ing at the same time in the same
arena on the opposite connected
rink.
Both Goderich teams some-
how managed to score the first
goal of each game at the same
time. The Petites pulled off a 3-1
victory just minutes before the
Novice girls were finished and
came over in full equipment to
rally them on.
At this point the Novice game
was a bit of a nail -biter with a 5-3
score in favour of our Goderich
girls, but Markham was coming
on very strong. The crowd got so
loud at the end of the game that
the players on the ice didn't even
realize that the game was over.
Goderich held on for a 5-4 win.
The fourth and final game was
early Sunday morning for the
Novice team against Mississau-
ga. By the end of the first period
the Goderich squad was playing
very strong and had a 3-1 lead.
They kept up this pace through-
out the second period and came
out with the 7-3 victory for the
gold medal.
The Novice team consists
of: Haillie Stothers, Courtney
Sowerby, Sage Milne, Kendra
Mechenton, Bryn Lewis, Nerena
Goud, Sarah Glenn, Chloe Field,
Chloe Ferguson, Megan Dunn
and Megan Bettles.
Bantam Sailorettes advance in playoffs
On Thursday, at the Maitland
Recreational Centre, Stratford
edged the Bantam Sailorettes
2-1 in post=season play. Ali
Frayne scored the lone Goderich
goal of the evening with an as-
sist from Michelle Kelly in the
first period.
The Sailorettes played a tight
defensive game that kept the
top-ranked Stratford offense to
two goals. Brooke Guikema on
defence blocked a number of
shots. Jaden Mitchell and Aja
Hogan -Cann also played a de-
fence aggressively.
Despite the loss, the Sailor-
ettes move on to play Kincardine
in the next level of bahtam girls
playoff action.
