How much more could we get accomplished? How much more down-time could we have if there were just a cou- ple more hours after we go't home from work? But how do we get it? Work faster? Work harder? Choose to do different things? Maybe. But there might be a different option. According to Yogi Bhajan, the man who brought kund- alini yoga to the West, the best way to find more time in the day is to meditate every day. Say what? That's ridicu- lous! How can I find the time to meditate if I don't have enough time in the day already? Well, the interesting thing about meditation is that it focuses the mind. It calms the emotions. It brings us into the present. It teaches our minds to become "one - pointed", focused, and Blear. When you meditate each day, the rest of your day becomes easier. Your mind is calmer. You tend to be more centred, more focussed on the task. You make bet- ter decisions. You don't. snake as many mistakes. Things run more smoothly. It becomes clearer what you want to do in a day. Without being distracted and constantly rushing, you find yourself able to sit still for a moment and make true choices in your day as opposed to just doing things out of habit or convenience. But most of all, you are more present. Each moment starts to stand on its own. Because of this, the world seems to slow down. It doesn't feel like you are rushing from one thing to the next. As each thing comes up in the day, you just work with it, enjoy it, and go on to the next thing. But what if you aren't into yoga or meditation? What if that just isn't your bag? The great thing is that meditation is something very natural for us h u m a n s. Different groups teach different styles of medita- tion and each of them have a spe- cific effect on the mind. But regular meditation can look like all kinds of things. It can look like relaxing with a cup of tea on your front porch each morning. Or it can look like your morning run or a regular walk through the woods. Whatever calms the mind and brings you centred is beautiful meditation. I have done some of my best medi- tating just sitting on my couch staring into space just waiting for my mind to stop spinning. Eventually it always comes back to the present. If your morning medita- tion is your cup of coffee and the morning newspaper, consider for a time, skip- ping the newspaper. It winds the mind up and gets in the hyper -drive of the world. If your evening medita- tion is lying in bed.watching the 11 o'clock news, con- sider skipping the news and just closing your eyes and relaxing for 20 minutes before bed. The point is to relax, become centred, and remember that you are actu- ally somewhere inside that mass of thoughts, goals, expectations, and worries that wecarry around with us all of the time. So, if you find yourself at the end of your rope— not enough time in the day to get anything done and burning the candle at both ends, consider taking 10 or 20 minutes each day to just relax, centre yourself, and meditate -- in whatever way works for you.
