Lions provide
tasty treat
with local
talent, tastes
Dave Sykes

There were a number of delectable and
delicious food treats to sample at the Goder-
ich Lions Club's A Taste of Goderich Satur-
day and patrons weaved through an eclectic
array of auction offerings that featured near-
ly 150 items covering everything from se-
rene sailboat excursions to functional hedge
trimmers.
As much as patrons came to sample the
culinary fare of area restaurants and bid on a
host of interesting auction items, it was the
talent competition that stole the attention of
ovel 300 in attendance.
Ten local acts were involved in the talent
competititn.and featured group performanc-
es from Huron String School, the Glamour
Girls and Corrigan Irish Dancers, as well as
solo performances by Cassandra Phillips -
Grande, Kailey Paige, Jenna Knoop, Robyn
Nicholson, Jinelle Gaynor and Anne Potter.
The crowd voted for their three favorites
after the performances and singer, Anne
Potter, who wowed the crowd with rendi-
tions of Your Daddy's Son and The Girl in
14G was a clear winner taking the $500 first
place savings bond.
The Corrigan Irish Dancers, led by
Shaughnessy Shiflett, took second place
honours and singer Jinelle Gaynor was
third.
For organizer Gord Grant, the opportunity
to showcase local talent was the highlight of
the evening.
"All the kids deserve thanks for a heartfelt
job and they all put in just one heck of an ef-
fort," he said. "The competition gives young
kids a chance to perform in front of an ap-
preciative audience. There is a tremendous
amount of talent in town."
While the format may change slightly
around the timing of food service to give
performers mom attention, the club may
also alter the number of acts in the competi-
tion.
More than 300 people took part in the
other elements of the evening, sampling
the food of local restaurants, Benmiller Inn,
Wicked Willys, Boston Pizza, Crabby Joes
and The Parkhouse and bidding on nearly
150 items donated for the silent and live
auction, capably handled by Huron -Bruce
MP Ben Lobb, who gently nudged the bids
on a For Better or Worse cartoon board from
syndicated cartoonists Lynn Johnston.
"We had over 300 people and the hall was
pretty full. Considering the weather it was a
great turnout," Grant said. "We are grateful
to the community for donations of items but
we couldn't do this without the restaurants
in town. They are a big part of this event"
Proceeds from the event will be used to
fund over 60 charitable projects.
The talent portion of the evening was
hosted by Tom Dean of FM 104.9 and the
sound system was donated by Roque Sound
Entertainment.
