It's time to pay for
climate change
While U.S. Prat Barack Obama was making nice with Prime Minister
Stephen Harper on the issue of global warming last week, the real work was
being started by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Clinton was flying off for talks with the country that will decide the fate of
the Kyoto accord and whatever succeeds it this December in Copenhagen.
That's China, now the world's latest emitter of greenhouse gasses (GHG)
and, along with the U.S., responsible for about 40 per cent of global emissions.
Canada accounts for two per cent and yet is the only one of these three coun-
tries impacted by Kyoto. .
While we're in violation of the United Nations treaty to which the previous
Liberal government committed us, neither China nor the U.S. are affected.
China leads the developing world, which Kyoto's drafters exempted from
having to lower GHG emissions for the duration of the treaty from 2008 to
2012.
The U.S., dating back to the Bill Clinton -Al Gore administration, never rati-
fied Kyoto because of this omission. It's position then, and now, is that any
global warming treaty requires the developing world to lower emissions, as
well as industrialized countries.
Given Obama's commitment, following the George Bush era, to re-engage
the U.S. in a leadership role in climate change, Canadians cheering him on
should understand what it will mean for us. It means we will have to pay to
help the developing world lower its GHG emissions as part of whatever agree-
ment replaces Kyoto.
As the Washington Post reported Friday following Obama's visit to Canada,
"A key questions is whether. the United States and other wealthy nations are
willing to help finance this low -carbon transition for developing nations.
Achim Steiner, executive director of the UN Environment Program, said China
and India are asking, 'Are you willing to help share that cost so we can go to a
cleaner future?"'
Best to remember this the next time Obama comes calling on climate
change. Because soon, he's going to want more from us than a Beaver Tail and
a c ouple•of Maple Leaf cookies for his daughters. (Sun Media)
Local talent a tasty treat
Those in attendance at the Lions Club's A Taste of Goderich Saturday eve-
ning, were able to sample some tasty food bits but the real highlight of the
evening was the showcase of local talent.
And the competition illustrated the•fact that there's a deep talent pool in the
Goderich area.
From the string precision of the Huron String School through to the stirring
performances of a number of skilled singers to the hand -clapping energy of the
Corrigan Irish Dancers, the talent competition held a hungry crowd in place.
The Lions Club is to be commended for providing a forum for young people
to showcase their talent and compete for cash prizes, savings bonds in this case.
It provides a rare opportunity for youngsters to perforin in front of a substantial
audience and the greatest benefit is that the audience gets to experience and
appreciate the outstanding young talent that quietly exists in Goderich.
While a mix of a number of events took the audience'sattention away from
the performers at times, the event shows great promise and is deserving of a
high profile. Congratulations to the young performers, they demonstrated that
there is some amazing talent in town. And thanks to the Lions for giving them
• an opportunity to perform. (D.S.)

Proposal could enhance employment
To the Editor;
This proposal, I believe, is the most important of
all regarding future use of Maitland Woods Urban
Forest, which includes Part 4 and Part 5 Plan
22R5535, Reg. May 3, 2009.
As I am sure that you understand, not only my
concerns but also those of others is that we do not
want any disturbance of any kind through Part 4
and Part 5 Plan 22R5535. Saying that, there are
many options that will use this area to enhance
employment and that I believe is what project
00178 is all about. -
During the years of 2007 and 2008, I did exten-
sive research. in the area of the project 00178 for
which this screening report is directed. I have spent
more time than anyone in the area at times depend-
ing on the season every day. And have located,
identified and documented most, but not all, of the
species that make up the living ecosystem of
Maitland Woods Urban Forest and Part 4 and 5.
I am an Ontario Certified Hike Leader and last
fall I worked with Goderich District Collegiate
Environment teacher, Wendy Miltenberg. holding

AMSD authorized Biology and Environment
classes in Maitland Woods Urban Forest, including
Part 4 the Wetland and Part 5 the open tract. This
open air classroom is less than 15 minute walk
from the High School, G.D.C.I.
The color photo on the enclosed brochure is of
the Grade 11/12 environment class, with teacher
Miltenberg in the foreground around the big tree.
This tree is the reason for the proposed road redi-
rection. It is the largest tree in its specie class in the
Province of Ontario.
Subsequently, the incredible interest by all stu-
dents and teachers in this open air classroom,
encouraged teachers Miltenberg and Kovac to go
further. The enclosed brochure says it all!
The opportunities available with this tract of
Carolinian Forest and Wetland are endless for a
total educational experience. The open field Part 5
can become a student enhanced arboretum, or can
be left to revert to its natural state of forest cover
conducive to the area. Left untouched, Part 5 will
show change within the year.
