Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb .spoke at the Mayor's lunch about the federal government's decision to
stimulate the economy by buying $50 billion in mortgages to give banks liquidity.
Stimulus, credit top federal to-do list
signal -star staff
It's appropriate that Canadians
are facing hard times in the Chi-
nese year -of -the -ox, Huron -Bruce
MP Ben Lobb said to the lunch
crowd.
"We're prepared to toil long and
hard," said Lobb. "We're capable
of hardship without complaint."
Lobb used his time at the podi-
um to outline the safeguards put in
place by the federal government to
ensure job and income security for
Canadians during the "collapse of
the markets."
Freeing up credit for businesses
facing hard times is of utmost im-
portance, Lobb said.
With banks growing increasingly
apprehensive about lending money
due to a hostile economic climate,
the government is trying to coax
banks into freeing up more dollars.
"They've capped, cut and elimi-
ated (credit) altogether," Lobb said.
"We need to keep Canadians' finan-
cial footing on the ground."
The federal government's effort
to get credit flowing into the hands
of business and consumers involves
buying $50 billion in government -
insured mortgages to give banks li-
quidity.
Lobb said the move is only natural,
as ultimately, "the government is on
the hook anyway."
Lobb estimated the federal govern-
ment would up that figure by the fall.

Parking on East Street was a hot top-
ic at council this week, with councilor
Myles Murdock leading the charge to
have a 15-tninute maximum installed
for the business section surrounding the
Canada Post office.
"That area experiences the most prob-
lems for parking," Murdock said, adding
signage declaring time limits on parking
should be erected to curtail the prob-
lem.
However, the idea met with opposi-

tion, as the limitations could be difficult
to properly monitor.
"It's a cyclical thing," said Goder-
ich clerk -administrator, Larry McCabe.
"You just can't enforce one small area
for 15 minutes."
Mayor Dib Shewfelt coincided with
this, adding the town could look at other
parking options in the area.
A motion was made by Murdock to
install three signs for 15 -minute park-
ing on East Street, seconded by David
Yates.
The motion was defeated.
