"Is the county and communtiy ready for when our em-
ployees are ready?"
Speaking first at the mayor's lunch, Davis said moving
forward will take a cooperative effort.
He said there are two groups to consider regarding the
shut -down of Volvo's Goderich plant: the employees and
the community. Both will have a role to play in the com-
ing months, either proactively or supportive.
With the first wave of layoffs already happening, he
said the reality of the situation has to be dealt with in a
timely manner.

"There are good people on
both sides," he said. "How
quickly can we get people
through this process?"
Davis outlined Volvo's plans
for employees facing the shut-
down of the plant as a. three -
pronged approach: assessment,
training and placement.
The company is putting
$250,000 into training, trade schools and workshops, in-
cluding collaborations with St. Clair and Conestoga col-
leges.
Fourteen per cent of the workforce, he said, have suc-
cessfully transitioned into other jobs, with another 40
busing to Conestoga College on the weekends to get their
welding tickets.
Mayor Deb Shewfelt said in his address it was great
to see that level of commitment to employees Volvo is
showing.
However, Davis said despite the options available
there are still some who still haven't come to terms with
Volvo's closure in Goderich.
"There are employees still in denial," he said. "We
need to get them moving."
Ultimately, he said, no matter how large Volvo's efforts
to make sure all employees are taken care of, it is all moot
if people refuse to take advantage of the help offered.
However, the community also has a role he said, and
it's important they are prepared for it.
Rather than have all the onus on the municipality to
make industry accessible to terminated employees, Davis
said it's time for individual sectors to take action.
As the county seeks to rebrand itself, he
said employers need to be leading the way in
"It won't be easy," he said.
Davis suggested a two-day conference with
the heads of Huron's economic pillars to not
only determine what their industries need to
survive, but to act on that as well.

Shewflet said the change of branding is
conducive to the fourth pillar of the Goderich
economy, that of heritage and culture.
Again using maps to illustrate council's
plans, Shewfelt showed an overhead view of
the Livery and surrounding lot.
"This has huge potential for Goderich," he
said. "It's a great downtown setting."
The proposed performance centre for
downtown Goderich would enhance not only
an already -lively arts community, but the lo-
cal economy as well. .
"We've just got to get you to figure out
where the pot is we can tap," Shewfelt said to
Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb. Consultant Jan-
ice Barlow has been recruited for the project
and Shewfelt noted her work on Yonge Street
in Toronto as an example.
With so much happening both in town
and to the economy, Shewfelt said Goderich
is facing a period similar to that of the late
1970s, adding like then, he is confident the
town will emerge from the eutrent slump
stronger than it was going in.
