Harbour, Volvo hot topics at mayor's lunch aitrair clr.e.. signal -star stqff Tough times call for tough decisions and Goderich mayor Deb Shewfelt said council has risen to the challenge at the 2009 View to the Future lunch Feb. 19 at Saltford Valley Hall. In outlining the direction of the Town of Goderich in the coming year, Shewfelt referred to a list of 20 projects - the re- sult of council's so-called "no list" - and the town's priorities therein. Using .aerial maps, . Shewfelt outlined the town's plan for the north harbour. Expansion and reclaimation would take place on the north wharf, extending to the break wall. With little industrial land left at the harbour, and a desire to increase the usage of the port, the mayor said 14 acres would be added. "With a $70 million expan- sion at the mine squeezed in there," Shewfelt said. "Space is scarce." Shewfelt referred to a Univer- sity of Western Ontario study showing Ontario's ports were under -used. In an effort to in- crease the shipping capacity at that harbour, council is asking for $30 million under the Build Canada Fund. Meanwhile, Shewfelt said the Town will 'be closing Snug Har- bour. He said the marina has been unprofitable for the past few years and in anticipation of massive in- frastructure work, council decided to take action. Meanwhile, council is already benefiting from government dol- lars as construction of the new Town Hall has been underway since the summer. Shewfelt said the project will employ many "green" initiatives. The mayor readily admitted it was a "make-work" project, add- ing when the economy is slow it's time to focus inward. However, he recognized there are some who would say otherwise - espe- cially in a town facing 500 layoffs in the coming year. "Some say you should be div- ing for a hole right now and not doing anything,' he said. "I say, get some of these (infrastructure) jobs done." To make sure there are work- ers ready for a different economy, Volvo general manager Jay Davis said the manufacturer is preparing its employees. However, he said the municipality should get ready too. • "When bad things happen there are major changes,',. said Davis. See MAYOR, Page 2 A 41 114 a re' f.
