Health unit concerned with
number of student illnesses
The Huron County Health Unit is con-
cerned with increasing illnesses in the
community that now appear to be spread-
ing into area schools. A higher than normal
absentee rate is being reported in primary
and secondary schools.
Respiratory illnesses account for the
majority of those off sick. There have
been some cases of both influenza A and
B detected in the, general population this
year. It has not been determined yet if this
is what has moved into the schools.
There has also been a lot of stomach ill-
ness causing vomiting and diarrhea that
has been going around.
The Health Unit has five important piec-
es of advice for Huron County residents:
1. Get a flu shot it's not too late to get
your free vaccination at your doctor's of -

2. Stay home from work or school if
you are ill — don't spread the infection.
3. Wash your hands thoroughly and fre-
quently - it remains our best defense for
stopping the spread of illness.
4. Frequently sanitize high contact sur-
faces like computer keyboards and mice -
or telephones - this is also very effective is
stopping your chances of getting ill.
5. Don't visit nursing homes, hospitals,
the elderly, very young or sick people if
you are sick - people with compromised
health for other reasons are particularly
at risk for developing severe or even fatal
complications from additional illness.
The health unit will continue to monitor
the situation to help Huron County resi-
dents stop the spread of infections.
