Petites take ringette silver
at North York tournament
The Goderich Petite ringette team
came home laden with silver hardware
last week, after a close 5-4 overtime
loss to Richmond Hill in a North York
tournament.
In the gold -medal match, Goderich
led the way and controlled the ring
from early on, enjoying a 4-2 lead af-
ter the second period. However, a late
start by Richmond Hill saw the score
shift with two minutes left. With an
empty net and an extra attacker, Rich-
mond Hill tied it up just in time to send
the game to over time.
Teegan Muggride and Nicole Schil-
be divided the goals for Goderich, and
Erin Boyce put forth a formidable ef-
fort between the pipes.
That match served as sweet revenge
for Richmond Hill, who went down
to the Petites in a 7-4 opening round
loss.
Jenna Stanbury scored a beautiful
breakaway shot assisted by Brienne
Merner and Jannessa Reneaud. Schilbe
put in two•of her own assisted by Sam-
mi Stothers and Reagan Brown. Stoth-
ers, Claire Hesselwood and Muggride
provided the additional goals.
En route to the championship round,
the girls showed New Market the door
with a 3-1 win. Grace Bonnet, Stanbury
and Muggride scored for Goderich.
The Petites were on the road last
week and are looking forward to play-
offs to begin.
Juniors' win streak ends with three
It's been said that all good things must
come to an end and this rings true with
the winning ways of the Goderich Junior
Ringette team. The ladies fell hard to the
Forest Xtreme on Sunday at the Maitland
Recreation Centre with a lopsided victory
in favour of the visitors 10-1.
"We're not making excuses here, but
six of the girls have the flu and we were
missing two of our regulars including our
goalie," explained team trainer Deb Aus-
tin.
Despite half of the squad belonging in
the infirmary the Juniors provided good,
clean competition for the Forest team.
The visitors led at the halfway point 4-1
however the Goderich club was unable to
solve the opposition's hot goalie.
Numerous good, hard shots were deliv-
ered by the Goderich forwards as well as
a few goal -mouth scrambles however the
ladies were unable to capitalize.
As with any game though, the Juniors
were able to take away several positives
from the contest. Great passing and some
incredible transition plays in the neutral
zone created some good scoring chances
for the home club.
Coach Kevin Hummel spoke up after
the loss as well.
"1 was paticularly proud of our ladies
keeping their cool when the Forest team
ran the score up as well as ran up a whop-
ping 18 minutes in penalties which in-
cluded four tripping penalties," he said.
"Two of which were after the whistle."
"We showed composure and tenacity at
the same time," remarked forward Chan -
dal Cunningham.
The Goderich Juniors looked to get
back on the win side with an away game
against Exeter this weekend in Hensall.
True to their mark, Goderich came out on
top, 7-5, their fourth win in five games.
-I hated every minute of training, but 1 said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now
and Five the rest of your We as a champion.""
