Sailors lost a heart -breaker of a match against Listowel in the Western Ontario Atheltic Association quarter -finals last week at the Maitland Rec. Centre. Puck drops on Old Deckhands tourney Friday Gerard Cass signal -star staff It's been 30 years and the Goderich Old Deckhands' tournament shows no signs of slowing down. "We've got a full slate of 16 teams," said Deckhand Ron Coniveau. u. "I think we're in good shape." The tournament will have four divi- sions of four teams each: Tiger Dunlop, Maitland, John Phillips Memorial and Huron. Five Goderich and area teams are part of this year's lineup, with teams from Clinton, Zurich, Michigan, Guelph, Lon- don and beyond filling out the roster. Repr .. 'fling Goderich in the Tiger Dunlop ,' Division are the Lakeport Hawks and Goderich Talbot Realty. In the John Phillips Memorial Division are Gocerich ABC Investments and from a little further'down the highway, the Port Albert River Rats. Finally, in the Huron Division, the God- erich Weedman Bushwackers will be en- joying their second year on the ice. The Bushwackers will be opening the tournament Friday with a 6:30 p.m. game against the Clinton Fowl -Ups, followed by the River Rats at 7:30 p.m. against lonig-time tournament supporters, the Zu- rich Has -Beans: ABC Investments will also be in skates opening night, taking on the Port Stanley Cardiacs at 9:30 p.m. All of Friday's games are at the Memo- . rial Arena, however there will be a hand- ful of games played at the Maitland Satur- day and Sunday mornings. - While the times may have changed over the years, Corriveau said there are a num-. ber of teams that have been patrons of the tournament almost every step of the way. "Some teams are here year after year," he said. "Thirty years is a long time. We feel pretty good about that." Port Stanley has fielded a team every single year, and groups like the Has-Beens and Fowl -Ups are not far off. As for the Old Deckhands, Corriveau,, noted Bill Martin has been on the team for 30 years, as has Buck Million - who is also offering his services to Port Albert on the ice this time around. Hand -in -hockey -gloved -hand with the tournament is the Old Deckhands dance, and Corriveau said this year, the Full Nel- sons will be providing the entertainment. Continued on page 24 1 1
