Robotics team sends "Ragnarok" away
Danny Scott
signal -star staff
The GDCI Robotics team has
travelled a long and arduous road,
but they've succeeded.
By press time, their robot for the
FIRST Robotics competition will be
en route to Mississauga to compete
against other students' machines.
Their robot, named Ragnarok
after the destruction of the gods in
Norse mythology, will compete in
a competition that proves the build-
ers' mastery of science and technol-
ogy. The robot will have to perform
tasks, such as picking up a ball, that
require a great deal of ingenuity on
the builders' behalf.
Matt Books, a member of the ro-
botics team, explained some of the
team's hopes for the event.
"We're hoping win awards, of
course, to get some sponsorship from
Bruce Power, but we're also trying to
get in the top teams," He explained.
"The top teams get to pick two other
teams and try to win. Then they get
to go to Atlanta."
The road from concept to function-
ing robot has been anything but easy
for the team, but overcoming some
of the obstacles they have faced has
made the robot a stronger contender.
"We had one situation where a part
didn't work the way it was designed
to," Books said. "So we made a new
design, and built it, and the new part
works better than the old part would
have."
The team has spent over $6,000
bringing their vision to fruition, but
thats not indicative of the value of
the robot. Books said that many of
the parts, beyond the basic kit pro-
vided by the robotics competition,
were donated, so they only had to
spend $100 irf parts, and $100 in
transit.
"Our budget was pretty much right
on," Books said. "We're not broke
now, but we will be once we finish
the competition."

Festival funds
The CT Scanner for Huron County campaign got a nice funding boost from Goderich Place residents
and staff who staged a silent auction in December on a group of donated and finely decorated
Christmas trees. The Festival of Trees, raised $1,000 for the capital campaign. Residents, (from left)
Helen Straughan, Gwen Durst, Mary Giffen and Elwin Pollock proudly display the big donation
cheque. Marci Schoenhals, Dawn Dolmage and Lori Pozniak (right) of Goderich Place made the
presentation to Dave Sykes, Alexandra Marine and General Hospital Foundation Board member.
