Lions ready to feast on a Taste of Goderich

A taste of the town will soon beoffered
up in heaps as the annual Taste of Goderich
fundraising gala draws closer.
On February 21, the Knights of Colum-
bus hall will be transformed into the Li-
ons feasting grounds as five local restau-
rants, including the Benmiller Inn, Boston
Pizza, Crabby Joe's, The Park House and
Wicked Willies, put their best signature
dishes forward as more than 200 auction
items go up for grabs.
The Goderich Lions Club has upped the
ante for the their fourth Auction and Din-
ner which will draw local restaurants and
entertainers together.
"This•year we're going to provide a ven-
ue and opportunity for young performers to
get up in front of an appreciative audience,"
said Lion Gord Grant, who is heading up
the entertainment for the evening.
The audience will be encouraged to vote
for their top three favourites and the result-
ing winners will be awarded a $500, $250
or $100 Canada 'Saving's Bond for first,
second and third places.
Aside from a taste of Goderich's finest
eats and a drink from its promising young
talent pool, the Lions have lined up an ar-
ray of silent auction items that will tickle
artistic and recreational taste buds.
Big items to watch for this year include
original artwork, Maple Leaf Hockey tick-
ets, boat and canoe excursions, fishing
trips, private box Sarnia Sting tickets, gift
certificates, and a diversified mix of gener-
ous donations of varied values.
But one item, added late to the menu, has
Grant excited about the bidding.
"We have received a generous donation
from Lynn Johnston, the nationally syndi-
cated cartoonist responsible for For Better
or Worse," Grant said. "We have an origi-
nal, signed weekend edition cartoon
strip as well as the full colour pub-
lisher's proof which will be framed
at Elizabeth's Art Gallery and will be
auctioned off at our live auction."
Tom Dean of 104.9 The Beach will host
the evening's entertainment, and 10. local,
young performers (individuals and groups)
including The Corrigan Irish Dancers, The
Huron String School, several singers and a
Ballet dancer will round out the entertain-
ment.
"Last year was very successful," Grant
said. "We managed to raise considerable
amount of money for the community, and
we're hoping to do
the same this year."
Organized by Li-
ons of Goderich,
every penny from
ticket sales and the
auction go straight
back into the com-
munity. In 2008,

Children's festival wants community input

One of Goderich's most popu-
lar events aims each year to give
the kids what they want — a sum-
mer to remember.
The Goderich Children's Fes-
tival, now coming into its eighth
year, is hoping to make June 2009
one of the best festivals yet for
kids of all sizes.
That's why this year event co-
ordinator Lori Patterson is once
again extending an arm to the
community to gather as much
feedback as possible.
The Childrens Festival com-
mittee is inviting everyone to
take part in an open forum • on
Thursday, Feb. 26 that is hoped
to generate some new ideas to
give the festival anew and excit-
ing flavour.
"We're looking for opinions
and ideas and we want to make
sure that we're meeting the ex-
pectations for all kids who want
to come." Patterson said.
The meeting will take place at
the Goderich Tourist Informa-
tion Centre at 7 .p.m., and will
focus on catering to the fun -filled
desires of children in every age
group, along with their caregiv-
ers.
"We just want to make sure that
we're putting on the best festival
that we can," she added.
The Children's Festival has
faced uncertainty in the past,
when volunteer manpower be-
came a challenge to maintain.
Patterson said that the event com-
mittee is always accepting new
members with fresh perspectives.
She said the desire to engage a
child's imagination is something
that most people don't mind striv-
ing for.
The committee is seeking feed-
back on past festival installments,
as well as ideas for planning the
next. The committee hasn't set a
theme for the festival, which in
the past has included superhe-
roes, and pirates and princesses.
Patterson added that volunteer-
ing and committee membership
are not required to take part in
the meeting.
"Everybody is welcome to
come out, people with or without
kids," she
said. "We
always wel-
come any
supporters."
