Governments coming together
for the benefit of all — that was the
theme of Saturday's funding blitz
that saw more than $53 million
handed out to municipalties in the
Huron -Bruce Riding.
Conservative MP Ben Lobb and
Liberal MPP Carol Mitchell trav-
elled the length of the county Feb.
14, handing out the first batch
of cheques for .the Build Canada
Fund communities component.
"This represents not only a boost
to the economy," said Mitchell.
"This represents jobs."
This brings the total amount of
government spending in the riding
to $56 million this fiscal year, and
Mitchell said that reflects the need
of rural communities, and the gov-
ernments' response.
"We have to work together in
tough times," said Lobb. "This is
a tremendous investment. It's a
recognition of the government's
appreciation of rural Ontario."
The infrastructure funds are
split three ways between the fed-
eral, provincial and municipal
government, and Goderich's share
is $751,000 for wastewater infra-
structure.
The money will be put towards
the purchase and installation of a
new ultraviolet disinfectant sys-
tem at the Goderich Pollution
Control Plant — a project estimat-
ed at $800,000.
"Well, we did ask for more,"
joked deputy mayor John Grace
during the cheque presentation.
"Goderich is pleased .to have the
federal and provincial govern-
ment recognize this strategy that
does benefit the environment."
Had Goderich's funding not
been approved, the UV system
would have been a go regardless,
as legislation would require the
work done by 2010.
However, clerk -administrator
Larry McCabe said the water re-
serve funds in place for the project
can now go to other areas of the
community, including roads and
the opening up of Parsons Court.
Lobb commended the mu-
nicipal representatives for
their work in making sure the
projects were "shovel -ready",
the criteria set out by the feds,
helping those who help them-
selves.
The County of Huron also
received $1.5 million for road in-
frastructure, and warden Ken Oke
said the county is very appreciative,
referring to the grant as a "gift".
