Vikings take gold at invitational volleyball tourney After a week packed with serves, bumps and spikes, the Vikes mustered up the energy tp take the gold medal at the Senior Girls Annual Viking Invita- tional volleyball tournament Feb. 7. Twelve teams converged on Goder- ich District Collegiate Institute Satur- day to participate in the tournament and this year, the weather helped all teams arrive including teams from London, and northern Bruce County. • The top two teams in each pool in round-robin play advanced to the semi- finals. Results from pool A were Ches- ley DHS first, and St. Anne's second. Pool B's results were GDCI first, and John Paul II from London second. The other eight teams were eliminated and sent packing. In the semi-finals, Chesley defeated John Paul Ir in two straight sets, while TIDCI sent St. Anne's home winning two . straight sets 25-14, 25-14. The Vikings finished pool play with seven wins and one loss, and used their mo- mentum to carry them through to the finals. . In the final match between GDCI and Chesley, the Vikes came from be- hind to take it all. Right sides Katie O'Brien and Laura Sowerby reliable defence allowed the girls to pick up many balls, While the Vikes were missing their libero, Chris- tine Burgsma stepped up to the chal- lenge with fantastic results despite be- ing ill throughout the tournament. This weekend concluded the Vikes' tournament play with their fifth and fi- nal tournament. In the last week, the team has played 40 sets of volleyball. The girls hard work in practice and dedication are definitely delivering dividends late in the season according to coach Kristy Phillips. The girls head into their last regular season match on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at GDCI against St. Mary's. The game will decide their match - ups for the Huron -Perth playoffs on February 19th in Stratford.
