Goderich Signal -Star, Wednesday, February 11, 2009 - Page A29 Family Day and Heritage Day celebrated at museum Family Day is about to be immersed in heritage this Feb. 16 at the Huron County Museum. Each year the museum celebrates Heritage Day on the third Monday in February. Now this day is made extra special since it is also Family Day. To celebrate these two special days, the Huron County Museum will be open on Monday, Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with free admission for all visitors. • Bring your friends and family to explore your local his- tory. While you are here, learn to play crokinole, enjoy a • game of checkers, and try your hand at paper folding plus pencil and paper games. Before you leave, enjoy a sweet treat and some warm apple cider. Be some of the first people to explore our new tempo- rary exhibit - Trees to Treasures: Folk Art from the George June Collection. From pine, poplar and walnut woods, George June created an extensive array of wooden folk art. From his early -carved canes to his intricate inlaid tabletops and dioramas, his pieces truly are treasures to enjoy. Carved mostly in the 1930s and 1940s, they vary from full size statues to tiny intricate acorn chains and jewelry. This temporary exhibit opens on Feb. 14 and continues until Aug. 4.. Fire deparment; use Family Day wisely The Goderich Fire Department is urg-. ing all residents to spend a few minutes this Family Day on a lifesaving activity that could protect the entire family from fire. Sit down with everyone in your house- hold and discuss how to get out of the . home in the event of a fire, said Steve Gardiner, Acting Fire Chief for Goder- ich. Consider drawing a floor plan of your home, identifying all escape routes from each room. Simple steps for home fire escape planning include: Install working smoke alarms on ev- ery storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas Its the law! Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm. • Assess the needs of everyone in the home - Identify anyone who requires as- sistance to get out of the home safely, such as small children or older adults. Identify all possible exits ( doors and windows ) and make sure they work - know two ways out of all areas, if pos- sible. Everyone must know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds Assign someone to help those who need assis- tance, .identify a safe meeting place out- . side and call the fire department from a neighbours home or cell phone. Get low and go - Everyone must know that if they are caught in smoke, they should get low and go under the smoke to the nearest safe exit. You may have only seconds to safely escape your home. Practice your home fire escape plan and make sure everyone can get out quickly.
