Picking -up the cheque
Candlelight Restaurant owner and operator Gus Balkouras and Hospital Foundation representative
John Peet attempted to fatten -up an already generous portion of scanner donation last Wednesday.
Balkouras set aside a portion of sales from successful events at his restaurant and tavern through-
out 2008 in order to fork over $2,000 to the CT Scanner for Huron County campaign.

In related news, the county's
director of cultural services sub-
mitted a revised Huron Heritage
Fund policy that stipulates ap-
plications for funding can only
be approved if they are received
before the project occurs, that
grants are valid for 12 months
from the date of approval by
council and that applications are
eligible to receive on grant per
fiscal year. The new criterion
for heritage -building projects
also requires -that buildings must
either have a heritage designa-
tion, a conversation easement
or a. historic -site designation.
Furthermore, the policy requires
funds be used primarily for work
which restores or reconstructs
original heritage resources.
Furthermore, the new word-
ing requires applicants to repay
the grant if an asset that has re-
ceived funding is sold within
five years of the grant allocation.
County council endorsed the re-
vised policy.
Council endorsed a commit-
tee -based resolution to deny
Huron Heritage Funding to two
projects after concerns were
raised about them at county
council's January session.
The Huron County Histori-
cal Society, which was seeking
$4;000 for $8,000 historical -
notes publications, and Brian
Jeffray for 35 West Limited, ask-
ing $5,000 for a $16,050 facade
update, were denied in their bids
for funding.

vote, those supporting the re-
quests were George Robertson
