HEART& STROKE FOUNDATION pF ONTARIO Finning answers. For life. Restarting hearts, restarting lives Every year in Canada, approximately 40,000 incidents of cardiac arrest occur. Of these, in Ontario alone, approximately 7,000 occur in out- of-hospital settings. The odds of surviving an out -of hospital cardiac arrest are about 5%, and with each passing minute, the probability of survival drops by nearly 10%. But `early defibrillation coupled with CPR can restart a heart and boost survival rates to 50% or more. Our Automated External Defibrillator (AED) initiative, Restart A Heart, Restart A Life, is helping improve the survival rate of sudden cardiac arrests in Ontario by providing the funding necessary to put AEDs into Ontario communities and provide the training required to use them. The Heart & Stroke Chase McEachern Tribute Fund is a driving force behind our AED initiative. It was inspired by the vision of a young boy who launched a nation-wide campaign to bring AEDs to hockey arenas across Canada. Sadly, Chase didn't live to see his dream become a reality — he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during gym class and passed away a few days later. Chase McEachern was 11 years old. Today, his parents, John and Dorothy McEachern, campaign tirelessly to make their son's dream a reality. In May 2007, Bill 171, appropriately named the Chase McEachern Act, was passed by the Ontario Legislature removing the threat of civil liability and one of the final barriers to widespread access to AEDs in the province. AEDs must become as commonplace in public buildings as fire extinguishers. The only remaining barrier' is funding. Through Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) programs province -wide, we are getting more AEDs into high-priority locations where they can make a difference. Partnering with individuals, community groups, corporate sponsors and with the support of governments, we have installed 1,184 AEDs and the appropriate training, with funding in place for 816 more this year. Nine lives have been saved, but there is so much more we can do. COSMETIC GALA at SHOPPERS DRUG -MART.
