With a bloated tummy and a greasy, or-
ange smile I scraped what little remained
of my official Winteifest dinner mil across
the bottom of the 104.9 The Beach crock.
pot to wrap up the Rotary Chiliil Cookoff
for 2009.
It was an mus task sample each
chili while taking copious cullinary notes - but
somehow... I made it through the octagonal
gauntlet of spices and sauces.
Of course, I didn't do it alone. Something of
this magnitude requited mote skills than inges-
tion alone.
That's why The Signal -Star sent a crack -
team of gastronomic guerillas consisting of my-
self - an iron -stomached megalomaniac - and
ace food -photographer Dominique Milburn - a
shutterbug who's eye for the extraordinary is
only matched by her nose for news.
Together, we took on the bold and the bland,
the thick and the runny, the crunchy and the
mummy in a no -holds -barred lunch of the
damned.
Everywhete you looked around The Square,
clumps of people were gathered around the
various entrants like so many navy beans in the
bottom of a bread bowl:
After getting some shots of Norm Nichols -
a real, live chili dog' I had my judging card,
Dominique had her canna and the entire town
had an appetite for consumption.
Don't fill up on bread because here is the
.• i highlight mel from this repotter's taste -
buds' perspective.
Hist up was the Bedfotd, who served me
up a steaming bowl of home. I swear on ev-
etyt ing holy this ivas my mom's recipe minus
nmusluooms, so it scored high on my list,.. bi-
ased though it was.
Next in the notables was the Oldtimets'
effort, with their slow -roasted peppers and
well-balanced spices. To be honest I was
expecting more. I had heard these guys
basically made a pot of lava last year, and
was hoping to have my mouth at least a
bit burned. I wasn't even whimpering.
What gives?
This year's winners 101.7 the One made te-
quila chili and you could taste the margarita in
it. Some nice crunch (from four different pep-
pers) added to the experience, but consistency-
wise, this was one that would run through you
rather than stick to your ribs. •
The Willing Works put in a decent effort,
though it was more like jambalaya than chili
with its various hobo meats.
Being a Zurich boy, I was also impressed
with the white beans in the Wicked Willy's
chili. Regardless of what Hensall will tell you,
beans are a part of our illusuidus heritage.
Fatally, the Scouts had another home -style
chili that had good-sized pepper chunks and
just enough zip to make it'a decentmeal.
Oh, and kudos to the folks at the Park Theatre
- your chili was served piping hot! Nice touch.
As the day moved on, my mouth began feel-
ing the combined heat of a dozen chills, and
while our intrepid photographer was capturing
the visual deliciousness, I was wondering if I
would make it home due to extrtemebloating. In
the end, the tallied votes claimed 101.7 is really
The One when it comes to chili. Second place
went to The Oldtimeas' Red Card Chili, and in
third, Knox Keepin' the Faith, singing spoon-
fuls. With mote than 600 photos taken through -
art the weekend,. look for more in our online
