Winterfest weekend
bri htens up season
g
So winter is finally easing its cold, snowy and icy grip.
And given the persistent cold temperatures and mounting snow,
Winterfest weekend provided the perfect February antidote to the winter
blahs.
Hundreds. of people gobbled up chili on The Square, took a leisurely
walk through the moon and lantern -lit pathways of the Maitland Woods,
ran through knee-deep snow in the snow -pitch tournament, witnessed the
artistic talents of young people in the Skating Carnival and Children's
Theatre Company productions or took in events at the library, museum and
other venues. In short, Wmterfest offered activities and events for the whole
family to enjoy over the weekend. The offerings have grown over the years
to capture the interests of all age groups and encourage participation in a
winter that has, so far, encouraged little beyond snow shoveling.
Organizations, groups, teams and town officials deserve credit for promot-
ing participation, fun activity and family-oriented events.
Despite the weather, Wmterfest brightened up an otherwise drab, dull
season. (D.S.)
Chamber gives boost to business
Recently the Goderich and District Chamber of Commerce held its Spirit
of Success gala awards dinner and recognizeii worthy recipients with busi-
ness, retail, manufacturing and entrepreneurial awards.
As much as the evening was a celebration of all that is positive about
businesses in the town and surrounding area, it was time to celebrate and
recognize the many community -minded business people who have contrib-
uted to the growth and success of the chamber itself.
From the dedicated initiatives of its founding members more than 17
years ago, the chamber has evolved from a group of interested business
owners looking for a forum to launch proactive business policies and sup-
port, to a bona fide organization of about 250 business members to proac-
tively promote and ensure the viability of the local business community.
The growth has been unprecedented but ably demonstrates that business
and industry was committed to a unified and leadership role in promoting
business and industry in Goderich. The role of the chamber and its mem-
bers is amplified in these challenging times.
And so it is fitting that the chamber recognized the best, brightest and
those taking a leadership role while, at the same time, acknowledging the
charter membership from the formative years.
The business landscape is changing dramatically and it is changing daily.
Retail business and industry is having to react and adapt at an accelerated
pace. The times are definitely challenging and organizations like the cham-
ber of commove will be vital to the continued success of local business.
It- is important that residents and local government fully support our
locally -owned and operated businesses to keep the economy strong in our
area.
Local business is .the best business. (D.S.)

Lanterns set scene for magical walk
What a great night it was on Friday, Feb 6.
The weather was a perfect mild with a full
moon for the Candelit walk through the
Maitland Woods. Thanks to Karen Melady and
all her lantern making crew, there were more
lanterns than ever along the Maitland Woods
trail, and many children seemed to be enjoying
the labyrinth in the sn( v and the Mound
Scramble. Thanks to a great effort by all the
volunteers.
When I returned home and took my dog
around .the block for its walk, to my surprise
and delight I found that the Town had been out

What a great improvement. I did not have to
scramble over snow barricades and the side-
walks were so good that I no longer had to take
to the road in some places. Keep up the good
work.
