Good morning everyone. I hope we are
all `Super Bowled' out. I'm sure I couldn't
tell you if the "right" guys won or not. I
might become interested when there's a girl
on the team - but not likely. I remember when I heard the
term "super bowl" and it was a compliment on my china.
Speaking of china, I have a lovely new cup and saucer by
my side, I have it filled with my own special blend. You will
see very shortly that I could have done nicely with half a
cup but it's poured now so let's get wet, shall we.
Celebrating their 60th anniversary this week were Fred
and Donna Young, former residents of Dungannon. The
couple held their celebration in the Vimy Lounge at the
Goderich Legion from 2:00 until 5:00 on Saturday, January
31. They were kept busy with well over 100 visitors drop-
ping by to offer best wishes. The Young couple had a lot of
family in from Camrose Alberta, as well as from Toronto
and London. Family and friends from Listowel, Brussels,
and the Lucknow and Dungannon area also managed to
brave the occasional nasty snow squall to offer the couple
many happy returns for the day.
After the official celebrations were over a crowd of about
20 went out for dinner at the Candlelight Restaurant return-
ing to the "bride's" sister's home to open cards and further
the merry -making. Among the abundance of acknowledg-
ments, the couple received congratulatory cards from local
politicians (including a small floral arrangement from the
town of Goderich), Prime Minister Harper and they antici-
pate a card from Her Majesty as well. Congratulations to
you both!
Celebrations of a different kind were held globally (or
should have been) this past week as we paid tribute to one
of Scotland's favorite sons, Robbie Burns born Jan. 25th
1759.- Haggis, neeps and taters along with perhaps a few
glasses of scotch pay homage to one of the greatest poets
Debbie
who ever lived. With over (as far as I could
Bain%ascertain) 350 songs and more than 500 po-
ems to his credit, there shouldn't be anyone
out there who hasn't heard at least one of
Robert Burns' works of art. Long may his works remain.
The Dungannon and Area Women's Institute has played
a small part in reestablishing supplies to a facility in Mad-
agascar, a small island off the east coast of Africa. Word
came through the F.W.I.O. (Federated Women's Institute of
Ontario) of a hurricane destroying a facility ran by a woman
who looks after over 350 children between the ages of two
and 12. She teaches the girls to do crafts so they can help
support themselves in a country where many make as little
as one dollar a day. We did our best to get as many craft
supplies to our contact in B.C. within a few days as a team
is loading up and taking items with them when they leave
on Feb. 15th. Our best wishes for a successful dispatch and
distribution go with'them.
If you are interested in a volunteer group with a 110 year
history of shaping laws and improving community living,
as well as having a global reach, then you need not look any
further. The Women's Institute is your answer. You can give
me a call if you have any questions or if you would like to
attend our next meeting. It goes without saying that with a
sweet group of ladies like ourselves, there is no pressure.
I would like to welcome three new members to our writ-
ing group Between The Sheets. It seems word is getting out
there. Joining us in the past week or two are Louise, who is
writing an adventure story for her grandson, Robert, who is
working hard on a story geared for the 12 - 13 year-old age
market and Trish, who I'm sure has big plans but I don't
think we've heard what they are as yet.
Well, as we all know, it is the Wiarton Willy week. I know
many of you put great store by what the little rodent can tell
us, but unless he tells us it's an early spring - I for one am
not listening. If thought is energy and energy
can move mountains, I say we collectively

Budget calls for
municipal action
From page 1
M9Clinchey said while infrastructure funding is
much-needed, the conditions on which it rests
add strain to an already tight budget. Most in-
frastructur funding programs are contingent on
a one-third contribution from federal, provincial
and municipal governments.
"I think that it was a poor idea to hamstring
the municipalities by putting conditions on this
money," he said. "If the federal government
comes in with $300,000, we have to figure out
where we come up with $300,000:"
For cash-strapped municipalities already
stricken with job losses, McClinchey said
matching federal and provincial funding will
be next to impossible without disrupting the tax
rates.
"We've made a definite effort to hold the line
on taxes," he said. "(Residents) are at the cap of
what they can endure."
The budget managed to meet with Liberal
support in Parliament, though McClinchey said
there are conditions for party approval.
The Liberals have put the Conservative gov-
ernment on economic probation, subject to re-
views every three months.
The full estimate of the federal . deficit is
pegged around, $85 million. However Mc-
Clinchey said this is a conservative estimate,
adding some economists have estimated the fi-
nal figure could be closer to $100 billion.
