Catholic board receives good fiscal news
Stew Slater
for the signal -star
There was good news in the
auditor's report for the Huron -
Perth Catholic District School
Board's 2007-08 fiscal year, with
over $250,000 being committed
to new reserve accounts and an-
other $300,000 kept in the existing
working fund reserve.
Originally, without the benefit
of the mid -year funding announce-
ments that have become common-
place with the ruling McGuinty
Liberals, business superintendent
Gerry Thuss had advised drawing
down the working fund reserve
by $309,089 to cover shortfalls.
But as details of those mid -year
announcements became known,
it was no longer necessary to take
from the working fund.
So, when Thuss presented trust-
ees with the 2007-08 audited finan-
cial statements at a regular meeting
Monday, Jan. 26, he could happily
report that the working fund re-
serve remained intact.
Not only that, but he could an-
nounce the creation of three small-
er reserve funds, using an overall
2007-08 surplus $269,541.
"We were able to put some mon-
ey into reserve to take care of some
future problems," Thuss said.
To offset a reduction in school
renewal allocation from the Educa-
tion Ministry for the current year's
budget, $110,000 was placed in a
capital projects reserve. There was
a surplus of $89,541 in the area of
school activities, and that will be
transferred to the schools for the
current 2008-09 fiscal year. And
$70,000 will be placed in a fund
aimed at communications and the
replacement of musical instru-
ments.
"We finished off the year in a
good spot," Thuss told reporters.

Large lake vessels attack Port of Goderich
The Canadian Coast Guard ice breaker; Griffon, made a return visit to Goderich and cut a path
through the ice near the breakwall for the lake freighter Algosteel late afternoon Tuesday, Jan. 27.
Both the Algosteel of Sault Ste. Marie and the Algowood were in port last week for a load of salt.
