Denny Scott signal -star staff The Goderich Pirates had a successful jump-start for their climb out of seventh place this weekend. The Pirates beat the visit- ing Clinton Radars in a shoo - tout after a hard-fought game to a 3-3 tie. Dave Meriam lead the Pi- rates, getting a natural hat - trick early in the game while Ryan Shelton played well in net. Shootout goals were scored by Mike Gillen, Deryk Whitehead, and James Gart- shore. Pirates general manager Trevor Bazinet said it was an important win for Goderich, as the one point from the OT win puts them within strik- ing distance of fifth place. Bazinet also stressed that next weekend's game is im- portant, as the Pirates are on the road both Friday night against the Radars again and Saturday night against Milverton. "If we can get at least two points out of next weekend, Photo by Denny Scott Pirate Dave Meriam attempts to sneak k past a Clinton Radar in Goderich's recent OT win. we'll leap frog over Monkton for sixth place, and if we can get two wins, we'll be in fifth place," he said. "Right now we're deadlocked for seventh with Exeter." Bazinet explained that it's do or die time, and as things are so close, the Pirates won't know their play-off situation until February 1, with the playoffs beginning Feb. 6. Dave Meriam is leading the team with 34 points (nine goals and 25 assists), with Dylan Stokes and Sean Bur- ton tied for second. Burton has 15 goals and eight as- sists, while Stokes has six goals and 17 assists. Sailors take three s back Denny Scott signal -star staff The Sailors had a rough weekend, dropping three games with progressively worse outcomes. Starting Friday night the Sailors were on the road in the first of two games against Wakerton for the weekend, losing 6-2. Goderich started slow, giv- ing up five goals before being able to mount any resistance. Early in the second there was a glimmer of light from the Sailors as Brandon Dyx- hoorn found Scott Miller for the first Goderich goal of the game. The Sailors put on a good show for the third, as one un- assisted goal from Matt Mc- Clinchey was enough to tie the period. Saturday night saw the Sailors at home for a match against Wingham, unfortu- nately the night would prove to be worse than the one be- fore. The Ironmen destroyed Goderich 9 to 1. Goderich's one marker was scored short-handed in the second period, put in the net by an unassisted Shawn Moore. On Sunday, to make up for a previous cancellation, Goder- ich once again took to the ice in Walkerton for their worst showing of the weekend. Goderich, once again, were only able to put one goal up, and it wouldn't be anywhere near what was needed to beat Walkerton, as the Hawks beat the Sailors 13-1. Goderich's goal, scored late in the first, was put in the net by Miller, assisted by Scott Sinclair and Jamie Miller. Goderich was outscored for the weekend 28-4. More than one-third of those goals were scored against a short- handed squad. Gmlerich spent 57 minutes in the penalty box, racking up 25 penalties against them, including one game misconduct.
