HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 2009-01-28, Page 10Page A10 - Goderich Signa' , Wednesday, January 28, 2009 Mackinaw crew presented with memento Members of the Heritage Goder- ich and Marine Heritage Commit- tees were on hand in Downtown Goderich Friday night to welcome the crew of the US Coast Guard Icebreaker `Mackinaw' and present them with a memento of the town, Postcard Views of Goderich. As a result of a bi-lateral shipping activity agreement between Canada and the United States, the Macki- naw was called upon to break the Lake Huron ice, paving the way for the ships coming and going from the Port of Goderich. Commissioned on June 10, 2006, the Mackinaw (WLBB 30) as- sumed the "Mackinaw" name and its heritage, and now stands as the largest United States Coast Guard Icebreaker on the Great Lakes. The Mackinaw is powered by three Caterpillar 3612 Turbo- charged V-12 engines - 3360 KW totaling 12,000 horsepower. So why the letters "WLBB", which follow its name? During the war, to avoid problems that Could arise from a Navy and Coast Guard ship having the same number on their bows, a "W" was painted before the number to signi- fy the ship as a Coast Guard ship. The "L" signifies working boat (Load-bearing), the "B" is for Big, and the Mackinaw's final "B" is for [ice]Breaker. The Mackinaw is commonly known as, a "buoy breaker", to some. This was its first visit to a Canadian port since being commis- sioned in 2006. Although, its pre- decessor, affectionately referred to as 'Big Mac', had paid numerous visits to our waters prior to being de -commissioned in 2005. Not un- like the Canadian Coast Guard, the crew members of the Mackinaw are wonderful ambassadors for their country.
