Mackinaw crew presented with memento
Members of the Heritage Goder-
ich and Marine Heritage Commit-
tees were on hand in Downtown
Goderich Friday night to welcome
the crew of the US Coast Guard
Icebreaker `Mackinaw' and present
them with a memento of the town,
Postcard Views of Goderich.
As a result of a bi-lateral shipping
activity agreement between Canada
and the United States, the Macki-
naw was called upon to break the
Lake Huron ice, paving the way for
the ships coming and going from
the Port of Goderich.
Commissioned on June 10, 2006,
the Mackinaw (WLBB 30) as-
sumed the "Mackinaw" name and
its heritage, and now stands as the
largest United States Coast Guard
Icebreaker on the Great Lakes.
The Mackinaw is powered by
three Caterpillar 3612 Turbo-
charged V-12 engines - 3360 KW
totaling 12,000 horsepower.
So why the letters "WLBB",
which follow its name?
The "W" has been applied to all

Coast Guard ships since WWII.
During the war, to avoid problems
that Could arise from a Navy and
Coast Guard ship having the same
number on their bows, a "W" was
painted before the number to signi-
fy the ship as a Coast Guard ship.
The "L" signifies working boat
(Load-bearing), the "B" is for Big,
and the Mackinaw's final "B" is for
[ice]Breaker.
The Mackinaw is commonly
known as, a "buoy breaker", to
some. This was its first visit to a
Canadian port since being commis-
sioned in 2006. Although, its pre-
decessor, affectionately referred to
as 'Big Mac', had paid numerous
visits to our waters prior to being
de -commissioned in 2005. Not un-
like the Canadian Coast Guard, the
crew members of the Mackinaw
are wonderful ambassadors for
their country.
The Port of Goderich extends
their sincere thanks to both the Ca-
nadian and US Coast Guard fleets
for keeping our waters open, al-
lowing maritime commerce to stay
strong along Ontario's West Coast.
