"We still have to iron out a few details." In an effort to cut down on volumes and extend its life, the Mid -Huron Landfill is un- dergoing the necessary adjustments to house a full-time hazardous waste depot. Facing a February 2011 closure date, the landfill board is looking at both the hazardous waste site and a clear bag policy (which takes effect this March). If both are successful, it could divert enough waste to keep the landfill open and save the municipalities of Goder- ich, Central Huron and Huron East the cost of transporting their waste to South Huron. "We hope with the depot and clear bags we can save this depot even longer," she said. "I'll potentially know a different date after... spring." The transition is coming along. Walker said staff from the landfill and others have already complexed .training for the handling of haz- ardous materials, including packaging and identification training. The project is being funded through the Canada Ontario Municipal Rural Infrastruc- ture Fund (COMRIF). Changes to the landfill include the revamping of a storage building for hazardous materials, as well as the nec- essary vehicles and equipment for the proper transportation of the waste. Oil, propane cylinders, batteries and fluo- rescent light bulbs — all are considered haz- ardous waste and residents will be able to run it straight to the dump in a few short months. Walker warns those dropping off hazardous materials should keep in mind the containers they use to do so. "If you drop off old gas in a jerry can, you won't get your jetty can back," she said. She said the depot would take all types of hazardous materials, with the exception of explosives and biological waste. Needles, • however, are an exception to the rule. Proof positive that such programs can work wonders for a landfill are the demolition and yard waste recycling programs, Walker said. More than 1,800 tonnes of garbage have been diverted from the landfill in the past year. Walker said there are a number of retail- ers now offering clear bags, and residents are encouraged to ask retailers about their avail- ability. If u yes well, Mid -Huron If all goes wMid-Huron ll will continue to operate as a hazardous waste depot and transfer station long after its antici- pated closing date. The next meeting of the Mid -Huron Landfill Site Board is Friday, February 18 at 3 p.m. in the Goderich Hydro board room.
