Caution urged on Huron
trails this season
Already this year, a number of people have lost their lives in
snowmobile and snow or weather-related accidents.
Many of these tragedies are the result of carelessness, need-
less daring or adventurous attitudes and, as is the case on our
roadways, proper speed and respect for the road conditions.
Recently, a snowmobiler was killed in the Huron County
area from injuries sustained in a single vehicle snowmobile
crash. The accident occurred late in the evening on a portion
of the trail near Belgrave.
For much .of this month, the snowmobile trails in this area
were closed due to 'poor weather conditions. Recent snowfalls
and cold temperatures, combined with proper grooming, have
finally improved the trails for use. Snowmobilers are still
reminded to check the OFSC Web site before heading out to
ride the trails and respect the speed of the machine and unpre-
dictability of the trials.
The accumulation of snow in town has created hazards of a
different' sort. Along town streets, snowbanks are piled par-
ticularly high reducing visibility, especially for people back-
ing out of driveways and onto the roadway. Motorists must
exercise caution on town streets and reduce speed to make
stopping the vehicle a viable option.
Also, the high snowbanks have also attracted the attention
of young children, who love nothing better than to slide down
the banks of snow. While adults may curse winter and the
incessant snowfall that lake -effect produces, children are
happy and often inattentive participants in the winter season.
Motorists must pay particular attention at intersections,
where snowbanks have reduced visibility and made it neces-
sary for drivers to cautiously ease out into intersections before
they are able to view oncoming traffic or pedestrians.
Exercising a little caution can prevent a serious accident and
injury.
Town crews are doing a good job of clearing snow from
streets on a regular basis, but it still remains the responsibil-
ity of drivers to respect the fact that the roads are slippery and
stopping requires more distance and less speed.
Winter has been with us since mid-November and since it
shows no signs of leaving anytime soon. The shoveling will
continue and the driving conditions will be somewhat difficult
and often dependent on the weather. Preparation and caution
are the operative words in winter. Prepare for out-of-town
trips and always exercise caution, whether driving in town or
on the highways.
So how many days left until spring? It seems like too
many.

Passersby comfort accident victims
To the Editor;
We would like to express our gratitude to all
the people who came to assist us following our
highway accident near Taylor's Corners last
Thursday. Without their help, escaping from
the rolled -over vehicle would have been
extremely difficult given the potential life-
threatening situation. Several people offered
comfort and moral support before the emer-
gency services arrived. Much credit and appre-
ciation should be given to the OPP,. paramedics
and the Jenkins' tow truck operator for render-
ing speedy and efficient assistance. It would be
remiss not to acknowledge the prompt atten-
tion and advice given by Bluewater Body and
Letters
opinion
Fender; McGee Motors; Banter, MacEwan and
Feagan, and the auto insurance company.
We have always advocated wearing seat
belts and, certainly in this situation, being
strapped in definitely saved us from very seri-
ous injury or even death. For this reason alone,
we walked away - instead of being carried
away - from the accident scene.
Yours sincerely,
Barry and Monica Page
