Town officials set out to trim 2009 budget

Hard times call for hard deci-
sions.
That was the message brought
forth at council's Jan. 22 budget
meeting, where the so-called "No
List" report presented by clerk ad-
ministrator Larry McCabe raised
a few eyebrows.
With assessment values increas-
ing all across the province, God-
erich was looking at more than a
six per cent increase in property
tax rates for 2009. The sharp rise
prompted council to get out the
scissors and start trimming the
$6.5 million budget.
Council is looking to cut nearly
$580,000 to mitigate the assess-
ment effects to a leaner 1.6 per
cent.
Amid a $30 million dollar Build
Canada request for harbour reclai-
•
mation, the town is taking a sen-
ous look at discontinuing the Snug
Harbour operation.
The report calls for the phasing
out of Snug Harbour and the "se-
curing of rates for existing users...
for a specified period of time" as
the town seeks to expand its in-
dustrial presence in the port..
"Let's look at not being in the
marina business," McCabe said.
Town administration and the
Goderich Port Management Cor-
poration (GPMC) are awaiting
federal and provincial announce-
ments as to funding allocations.
Bad news for the heritage *pro-
ponents. The CPR station will not
be seeing the restoration being
sought.
Instead, investment in the Main
Beach station will only go as far
as needed to bring the building up
to code. •
Approximately $50,000 isneed-
ed to complete the work already in
progress.
However, a series of break-ins
to the building has town staff re-
evaluating the location as a tem-
porary home for Public Works.
The Goderich Public Library
and Reuben R. Sallows Gallery
will not be receiving any extra
funds to study upgrades to the
buildlings third floor.
The project was scrapped due to
the costs associated with creating
storage space in the building. Mc-
Cabe said accessibility standards
could run any such project in the
neighbourhood of $1 million.
The County of Huron is currently
looking into finding archive space,
and the No -List suggests waiting
for their study to be completed.
