Construction may have slowed across Canada
and most of North America, but the value of build-
ing permits issued through ,the Town of Goderich
building office increased by more than $1 million
in 2008 over the previous year:
A report from the town's chief building official,
Jim Spence, indicates that 113 building permits
were issued in 2008 valued at $12.6 million com-
pared to 107 permits issued in 2007 at a value of
$11.5 million.
Most of the increase in value is contained in the
town's addition to the town hall buildings on West
Street. Two permits for additions are valued at $3.8
million and most of the increase in the value of
permits issues, came in the government and institu-
tional category where permits totaled $5.1 million
for the year.
Residential activity was
fairly stable throughout 2008
compared to 2007 and while
there were 12 more build-
ing permits issued in 2008
for residential purposes than
2007, the value was down
by $300,000 compared to the
'Goderich location :only.

previous year.
There were eight single-family homes constructed
in 2008, the same ,number as the previous year but
the value of the construction was down by $80,000.
More people were in the. business of upgrading
their homes as permits for additions and renova-
tions were up both in number and dollar value in
2008. During the year, 85 permits were issued for
residential purposes with a value of $3.1 million.
Commercial building activity was down by $1
million in 2008 to $4.1 million compared to $5.1
million in 2007.
There was only one industrial permit issued in
2008 for demolition while building activity in 2007
was more robust with 9 permits issued at a value
nearly $1 million.
The town will look at sharing it resources in the
building department, after agreeing to a request
from Central Huron to provide the services of a
building inspector on a part-time basis. The town
will put together a 90 -day agreement that will call
for a building inspector to work up to 17 hours per
week for Central Huron.
Central Huron would be invoiced for all related
costs, including wages' and benefits, and mileage.
Spence indicated that the sharing agreement should
work well for both municipalities adding that once
the town proceeds with the hiring of Fire
chief, who would be involved in inspec-
tions, the sharing model would change or
be. eliminated. Currently inspector Fred
Pellow is involved in fire inspections.
