The Goderich Midget Rep
team had a busy weekend to
start off their new year, going
5-0 to win fifth annual Scott
Easton Major -Midget Memo-
rial Hockey Tournament, held
in Gananoque.
Forward Coy Kulich won
the top forward skills compe-
tition, edging out local player
Jamie Droppo. Kulich had to
skate and weave through ob-
stacles to prove puck control.
Manager Dean Kulicli said
that Josh Martel and Lucas
Denomme also did well in the
skills competition, and admit-
ted he was surprised when the
team was awarded for their
playing by more than a tro-
phy.
"We didn't know there was
any award," he said. "And
then they gave us a cheque for
$400."
Dean said that, locally, he
has played in baseball tourna-
ments, and other non -hockey
tournaments, that provided
cash rewards, but this was a
first for him.
"I guess that's just some-
thing they do out east."

The Goderich Midget Rep team is pictured here, showing off their hardware from their domination
of a recent tournament held in Gananoque. The Midgets were undefeated throughout the tourna-
ment. •
"It was a really well run
tournament," he said. Goder-
ich won all five games, but,
according to Kulich, each
game was tight.
Their final, against Cobden,
was a 2-1 victory, while their
previous games were won

including Josh Martel, who
placed third in the fastest skat-
er competition, Gary Lunch
who placed sixth in shoot-out
accuracy, and Lucas Denom-

tending.
Kulich also said that many
of the teams came to the tour-
nament with very high re-
cords, some being undefeated,
but Goderich was able to over-
come, and it was in no small
part thanks to tournament
MVP, and Goderich Goalie,
Shawn Gethke.
"Shawn played really well.
He was one of the biggest
reasons we won," Kulich ex-
plained. "He played four of
our five games, and he only
let in four goals in the tourna-
ment; one in each game."

The fifth was la ed
by goaltender Lucas Denom-
me, who also only allowed
one goal.
Kulich also said that a big
part of why they won was the
dedicated staff the team has.
"We have 3 non -parent
coaches on the bench, and
they definitely need to be rec-
ognized."
The non -parent coaches,
Perry and Pete Bakker and
James Gartshore, all made the
tournament despite the fact
that all costs would have to be
out of pocket for them.
The tournament, which is
held in honour of Scott Eas-
ton, who passed away in 2003,
also played host to Pembroke,
Rockland, Metcalfe -Russel,
Millbrook, South Dundas,
Brighton, Athens, Brighton,
and North Frontenac.
