The Goderich Atom Local League had their ups and downs in
a recent tournament in Clifford, but they walked away with
their heads held high and silver hardware around their necks.
The second place finish is a testament to how far they've
come since the beginning of the year,

The Goderich Atom Local
League . Sailors have come a
long way from the start of their
season, growing froma team
with no experience to a solid
contender in their league.
"The kids were starting from
scratch," said coach Dirk Wolt-
erbeek. ' "Some have never
played an organized game of
hockey before."
Where inexperience may
present a setback, it's nothing a
Tittle hard work can't fix and the
Local League Atoms have been
improving steadily - so much
so they recently took home the

tournament in Clifford.
An early 2-1 loss against Li-
stowel and a 19-1 blowout
against the all -girls team of
sent the boys into the final
against Creemore.
It was a tough match and in the
end, the Sailors would take sec-

The boys also took second
place in the tournament's skills
competition.
Trenton Foster was the only
goalie to keep a shutout and the
relay team was second overall.

is near-complete for the. young
players, to the point where they
are "almost a team."
Wolterbeek said the atoms are
really starting to gel now, and
are becoming quite a competi-
tive force in the Local League
division. This, he said, comes on
the back of a lot of practice.
"I've seen improvements in
each and every one of them," he
said. "I'm very proud of them."
The Atom LL team is also go-
ing into the New Year in style af-
ter a $500 donation from Scotia -
bank allowed coaches to get the
players new jackets as a Christ-
