caps. The new lids replace the wide -brimmed style adopt-
ed by the Ontario Provincial Police in 1997 and are a throw-
back to the caps worn since 1930.

New hats, old look for officers
Ontarians will notice a visible
change in the appearance of Ontario
Provincial Police . (OPP) officers
across the province, as they trade in
their wide brim hats for new peak
caps.
The peak cap will be re -introduced
as a part of the OPP uniform and will
be worn by all officers serving with
the Ontario Provincial Police, begin-
ning today.
Huron detachment commander, In-
spector Dan Grant said the peak caps
are much more functional, and will
serve better than the wide -brimmed
caps, which he said are "just not prac-
tical for hands-on policing."
This year the OPP celebrates 100
years of policing in Ontario and
Commissioner Julian Fantino said
the re -introduction of the peak cap
will provide a hat that' is better suited
to the diverse conditions faced by the
women and men of the OPP.
The peak cap was first introduced
to the OPP in 1930 and replaced by a
wide brim hat in 1997.
Official Plan appeal awaits hearing

Call it a hitch in the plan.
The Town of Goderich `s Official
Plan is in a state of limbo right now,
hung up on the Ontario Municipal
Board (OMB) appeal table.
In question is a six -acre finger of
forested land bisecting the forty -acre
lot to the east of Maitland Woods
(part four, plan 22R5535)- smack
dab in the middle of the proposed
Parsons Court extension.
Goderich resident John Hazlitt is
behind the appeal, which seeks to
designate the patch of woods as natu
ral habitat -- a designation already
enjoyed by neighbouring Maitland

Trail Association, has been outspo-
ken on the subject of Maitland Woods
since the Parsons Court extension was
first drafted in the new plan. He has
also been a regular speaker at public
meetings on the issue.
The town had to consider three
things . for the Parsons Court exten-
sion: road allotments, sewage exten-
sion from Huckins Street and the
placement of two drainage ponds.
The Town of Goderich has said it
will not be making use of the Huck-
ins Street road allowance, which runs
through the woods, but has decided to
use directional drilling to extend .the
sewer system underneath the woods
to Parsons Court.
An environmental assessment
is being done on Maitland Woods

Hazlitt has been researching the
many species of plants and animals
in the woods as part of his case. The
road extension, he said, could elimi-
nate species in the unique climatic
conditions created by the woods. The
finger of land in question, he said, has
remained the same since glacial lake
Warren receded some 10,000 years
ago.
However, the appeal being lodged
by Hazlitt involves the whole Official
Plan, and not just the small piece of
Carolinian forest and wetland:
Huron County Planner, Joyce Wil-
son; said because the appeal is with
the entire OP, nothing can move for-
ward. Ideally, she said, the Parsons
Court issue could be dealt with on
the appeal table, and the town enact
other, progressive• policies such as
their downtown revitalization imme-
diately.
