Pirates roll Thunder with Friday night victory Donny Scott signal -star staff After a dramatic turn -around, the Goderich Pirates went from losing their first period against the Tilson- burg Thunder Friday, January 3, to doubling them at the Maitland Rec- reation Centre. Dearing the first period, the Pirates fell behind 2-1, with.their one marker being scored by Deryk Whitehead, assisted by Mark Wainman. Half ,way through the second, however the Pirates really took off, scoring four goals to Tilsonburg's one. Scoring for Goderich was Neil Steenstra with his first of the season, Scott Austin, Sean Burton and Mike Gillen. The third period saw Goderich once again ahead, scoring three goals to Tilsonburg's one. Pirates goals were scored by Dillon Stokes, Bur- ton, and Austin. Assists for the game went to Gil- len, Ian Gould, Stokes (3), Josh Lid- dle, Dave Meriam (2), Ryan Stuart and Whitehead Pirates' general manager Trevor Bazinet said that their next game, versus first -place Petrolia, would be one that Pirates fans should definitely not miss. "They're a first place team, and we're playing them in our arena. It's going to be a really good game," Ba- zinet said. "We can beat anyone the way we're playing, especially. in our own barn."' Bazinet also explained that the Pi- rates will have to finalize their roster, so the twenty five players that take to the ice against Petrolia will be the team that is going to the play-offs. Bazinet said the crowds have been good for the last few home games, but hopes to see more fans cheering their Pirates on. "Friday's game was a bad one to miss," he said. "It was really energetic and fast -paced." In previous Pirate action, Goderich was able to put another big win under their belt by beating Milverton 10-3. Goals were scored by Burton (3), Dave Little (2) Gould, Wainman, Austin, Matt MacPhee and James Gartshore Assists went to Ryan Samworth, Stokes (2), Gartshore, Kyle Hamil- ton, Little, Gillen, MacPhee, Meri- am, Gould, Wainman (2), and Tristan Kolkman (2). These two wins bring Goderich within one point of Monkton, and put them one point ahead of the Clinton Radars in the standings. The.Pirates play Petrolia next Fri- day, January 16 at the MRC. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
